💨AI Models Help Humanoid Robots Perceive Their Environment

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) developed “ARMOR,” which improves how humanoid robots navigate their surroundings by enhancing their spatial awareness.

“ARMOR” relies on Egocentric Perception, which prioritizes capturing the humanoid robot’s perspective by using a series of Depth Sensors. These Depth Sensors are placed throughout the humanoid robot’s arms, creating an “artificial skin” for increased spatial awareness.

“AMOR” also leverages a Transformer-Based Imitation Learning Policy (i.e., “T-IL Policy”), which is an AI architecture that allows humanoid robots to learn how to perform complex tasks by observing how human experts do it.

The “T-IL Policy” receives data for the humanoid robot’s Depth Sensors. Then, it uses that data to select the most appropriate actions by human experts to mimic based on the situation.

“ARMOR” achieved a 63.7% Collision Reduction and a 78.7% Navigation Improvement compared to traditional cameras on humanoid robots. It can be assembled using “off-the-shelf” hardware, making it accessible for various robotic applications.
