An LLM is essentially a sophisticated autocomplete machine trained on the entire internet. In other words, it’s a statistical tool designed to predict the probability of a sequence of words.

To train an LLM, it’s shown millions of sentences with the last word covered up. For example, when given: “I feel anxious when I speak in front of {BLANK}!” the LLM asks itself: given the words so far, what’s the most likely next word? In this case, it might predict: “{CROWDS}!”

Each time the LLM guesses wrong, it adjusts thousands of weights: numerical values that help it decide which words are more important for making better guesses in the future. These numerical values control how tens of thousands of words relate to each other within an LLM.

Right now, to make an LLM smarter at a specific task, AI researchers must feed it billions and billions of words tied to a specific subject matter. In contrast, a child doesn’t need to read the entire Library of Congress to understand what “{CROWDS}!” are.

Humans are “sample efficient,” meaning they learn a lot from a little. LLMs are “sample inefficient,” meaning they learn a little from a lot. Flapping Airplanes aims to close this “efficiency gap,” enabling LLMs to think at the level of humans without ingesting half the internet.

Most top-tier AI firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind have already used all the useful data available on the internet. “We’ve hit a data wall,” said SSI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever.

Humans are estimated to be 100,000x to 1,000,000x more “sample efficient.” If Flapping Airplanes fixes this, training costs collapse, energy usage drops, and iteration speed explodes.

Our DNA contains sequences of billions of “letters,” which tell our body how to repair, respond, and regulate. These sequences are a specific order of the four Nucleotides: Adenine {A}, Thymine {T}, Cytosine {C}, and Guanine {G}.

For example, a small piece of DNA might look like this: {ATCGTACG}. The order of these “letters” matters a lot. Even a minor change can affect how our body functions. Only about 2% of our DNA actually contains genes that tell our body how to build tissues and fight infections.

For decades, the other 98% of our DNA was dismissed as “junk” because we didn’t fully understand what it did. But now, we know it’s far from useless. It helps regulate when, where, and how our genes turn on and off.

The catch is it’s incredibly hard to decipher. It’s like trying to understand a foreign language without a dictionary. That’s where “AlphaGenome” comes in. It can read long strands of the other 98% of our DNA to understand the hidden layers of our genetic blueprint.

Many sicknesses are influenced by mutations in the other 98% of our DNA. For example, a single change in a Nucleotide might reduce the expression of a gene, contributing to genetic diseases like cancer or diabetes.
