🇺🇸AI Poses as U.S. Secretary of State
An unknown fraudster just used an audio deepfake to impersonate U.S. Secretary of State (SecState) Marco Rubio, and it worked.
Key Details:
An audio deepfake refers to AI-generated audio that realistically clones voices by simulating how a person’s lips, throat, and tongue produce sounds.
The unknown fraudster successfully contacted at least five high-level government officials, including:
A U.S. Governor
A Member of U.S. Congress
And THREE Foreign Ministers
They sent voicemails on Signal, a platform widely used by journalists, diplomats, and activists because it offers fully encrypted communication.
The goal was to gather sensitive information for blackmail and create diplomatic tension.
The unknown fraudster only needed 15 to 20 seconds of publicly available audio to create the audio deepfake.
Why It’s Important:
The Deloitte Center for Financial Services (DCFS) recently projected that audio deepfakes could enable fraud loss to reach $40 billion in the U.S. by 2027.
Even more alarming, audio deepfakes now require just 3 seconds of audio and can be created for as little as $1 per month.
🔍WTF’s Going on With Google Search
Alphabet’s Google is being forced to fight AI with AI, and it’s destroying the search giant’s $200 billion money-making machine: Google Search.
Key Details:
Google Search has been the dominant search engine for as long as we can remember, processing roughly 16.4 billion search queries per day.
But answer engines like Perplexity AI threaten this dominance by eliminating the hassle of sifting through endless websites.
So, why does this matter? For over two decades, we’ve turned to search engines like Google Search, typed in a search query, and received a list of blue links. Ranking high on that list of blue links has become a $200 billion money-making machine for Alphabet’s Google.
But to compete with the rising popularity of answer engines, Google Search recently rolled out “AI Mode,” which provides AI-generated summaries of your search queries.
These AI-generated summaries are reducing traffic to websites, slowly eating away at the very foundation of Google Search’s massive blue link empire.
In other words, brands aren’t paying to rank high on that list of blue links anymore because people aren’t using Google Search the same way; they’re increasingly relying on AI-generated summaries now.
Why It’s Important:
To make matters worse, Perplexity AI just unveiled “Comet,” a new Agentic AI-powered browser to take on Google Chrome. It enables you to deploy multiple AI Agents to autonomously perform daily tasks on your behalf.
Last year, District Judge Amit P. Mehta of the U.S. District Court of Columbia (D.C.C.) ruled that Alphabet’s Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly on search. Now, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is proposing what actions or penalties they should face. Is the era of Google Search over?
