🗞RECENT NEWS

BASED HARDWARE

Based Hardware recently unveiled Omi, an AI-powered wearable device that listens to your conversations to help you organize your life.

Key Details:
  • Omi can be worn as a necklace, with Omi’s AI assistant being activated by saying, “Hey Omi.”

  • Omi can also be attached to the side of your head to recognize specific brainwaves. So, instead of saying a hot word, you just think.

  • At every other moment, Omi is a microphone capturing your conversations throughout the day.

  • It can transcribe conversations, summarize arguments, and add events to your calendar.

  • Omi isn’t a standalone device. Everything is processed on a paired smartphone and stored in the cloud.

Why It’s Important:
  • Omi excels at setting reminders, scheduling appointments, and allowing you to revisit important conversations to clarify misunderstandings.

  • AI-powered wearable devices haven’t been successful past the Hype Stage. There’s no better proof than Humane’s Ai Pin and Rabbit’s R1. Will Omi be different?

META

📖Meta’s AI Team Uses Pirated eBooks to Train AI Models

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave the green light to use datasets of pirated eBooks for AI model training.

Key Details:
  • Meta’s AI Team used LibGen, a website that provides access to copyrighted eBooks from platforms like Cengage and McGraw Hill, to train AI models.

  • LibGen is a popular resource for students because it provides free access to course materials. However, this popular resource has been fined millions of dollars and ordered to shut down countless times.

  • Zuckerberg cleared using LibGen to train AI models despite concerns with Meta’s AI Team, who mentioned they’re “datasets we know to be pirated.”

  • Nikolay Bashlykov, an engineer on Meta’s AI Team, allegedly wrote a Script to remove the words “Copyright” and “Acknowledgments” from the pirated eBooks.

Why It’s Important:
  • Meta argues that AI models falls under “Fair Use” in copyright law through Transformative Use (i.e., adding new expression, meaning, or messaging to the original work).

  • In other words, AI models learn patterns from pirated eBooks to create new outputs significantly different from the original works.

AI ETHICS

🪦Is AI Redefining Death, Memory, and Immortality?

Image Source: Canva’s AI Image Generators/Magic Media

Imagine attending a funeral where the person who passed away speaks directly to you, sharing memories and answering your questions. This situation happened at 87-year-old Holocaust activist Marina Smith’s funeral.

So, how was this possible? Her family used StoryFile, a platform that creates AI-powered conversational videos. This platform provided the illusion of a live conversation with Mrs. Smith at her funeral.

StoryFile isn’t the only one pioneering the digital afterlife. Microsoft recently patented an AI framework that takes a person’s digital footprint (e.g., texts, emails, and social media) to create a conversational chatbot of them with their personality.

The idea of digital resurrections through AI-powered conversational videos and conversational chatbots has raised concerns about how this technology will affect the grieving process.
