RADBOUD UNIVERSITY (RU)

🧠AI Recreates Images From Brain Activity Recordings

Image Source: RadboudUMC/Functional MRI (fMRI) Scanner

Researchers at Radboud University (RU) developed an AI system that reconstructs images from brain activity recordings.

Key Details:
  • The AI system uses Functional MRI (fMRI) scanners to capture brain activity and translate it into images.

  • fMRI scanners measure brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow. When sections of your brain are active, there’s an increase in blood flow to those regions.

  • The volunteers viewed pictures while the fMRI scanners captured neural activity in their visual cortex.

  • The fMRI scanners were fed into the AI system, which reconstructed images with near-perfect accuracy.

  • “As far as I know, these are the closest, most accurate reconstructions to date,” said Dr. Umut Güçlü.

Why It’s Important:
  • This mind-reading technology could restore vision by stimulating the brain to create richer visual experiences for visually impaired individuals.

  • The AI system is a stepping stone toward more advanced Brain-Computer interfaces (BCIs) to create direct lines between your brain and external devices like a robotic limb.

WAYMO

🚔Police Officer Pulls Over Driverless Waymo Car

A police officer pulled over a driverless Waymo car for navigating on the wrong side of the road.

Key Details:
  • According to dispatch records, a police officer pulled over a self-driving Waymo car in Phoenix, AZ, after it ran a red light and pulled into a lane of oncoming traffic.

  • Waymo released a statement blaming the incident on “inconsistent construction signage.”

  • The self-driving Waymo car was “blocked from navigating back into the correct lane” for about 30 seconds when the police officer pulled it over.

  • Waymo recently published a Safety Case Framework showing that autonomous driving technology can save lives and improve mobility.

  • Waymo’s driverless cars experience 85% fewer injury crashes and 57% fewer police-reported crashes than human drivers. Localized data showcased an 80% injury crash reduction in San Francisco, CA.

Why It’s Important:
  • Waymo leverages simulators to train self-driving systems with specialized AI agents. These AI agents act as pedestrians, cyclists, traffic signals, and cars to create realistic environments for self-driving cars.

  • This incident highlights the unclear legal landscape of self-driving cars in the U.S. In the case of an accident with a self-driving car, who’s liable?

AI HACKS

🔐OpenAI Hacked?!

A hacker gained access to OpenAI’s internal messaging systems last year and stole details about the design of the company’s AI offerings.

The hacker lifted details from conversations in an online forum where employees discussed OpenAI’s latest technologies.

OpenAI informed employees at an all-hands meeting in April last year but decided not to share the news publicly since no customer information or partner data had been stolen.

AI RESEARCH

🦾Open-TeleVision Lets You Be the Robot

Researchers at UCSD and MIT introduced Open-TeleVision, an open-source teleoperation system that allows operators to control robots.

Open-TeleVision enables operators to actively perceive the robot’s surroundings in a stereoscopic manner. In other words, Open-TeleVision provides a three-dimensional video of the robot’s surroundings.

The system also mirrors the operator’s arm and hand movements on the robot, creating an immersive experience as if the operator’s mind were transmitted to a robot embodiment.

Open-TeleVision is accessible from any device within a website browser, including Virtual Reality (VR). An active neck with inverse kinematics analyzes robot head movements to determine joint positions that mirror the operator’s head movements.

In essence, Open-TeleVision goes beyond traditional joystick controls. It allows operators to experience the robot’s environment, almost inhabiting the robot’s body.
