IBM researchers and NASA scientists developed “Prithvi WxC,” a general-purpose AI model that predicts weather patterns and monitors climate variations.

Unlike standard AI models, general-purpose AI models can be customized for various use cases without requiring extensive retraining.

“Prithvi WxC” contains 2.3 billion parameters and was trained using 160 variables from the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2).

In general, more parameters make AI models more powerful, efficient, and faster. MERRA-2 is a high-resolution dataset that reconstructs past atmospheric conditions using an advanced climate framework.

“Prithvi WxC” relies on an Encoder-Decoder Architecture that processes input data to generate output data.

2. Decoder (i.e., “output data”): Analyze the sequence of observations to generate a response.
