Alibaba unveiled “Qwen2-VL,” a Vision Language Model (VLM) that outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4o (“o” for “omni”) across various benchmarks.

Key Details:
  • Alibaba is a Chinese-owned wholesale online marketplace that connects businesses with suppliers.

  • Multimodal AI models are AI models that interpret multiple data types, including text, images, audio, video, and code.

  • VLMs are multimodel AI models that process images and text to understand visual information.

  • VLMs consist of three elements:

    1. Image Encoder: converts images into numerical representations.

    2. Text Encoder: converts text into numerical representations.

    3. Information Fuser: creates unified numerical representations that contain images and text.

  • “Qwen2-VL” can analyze videos that are over 20 minutes long for dialog synthesis or content creation.

ANTHROPIC AND OPENAI

🏛Anthropic and OpenAI Partner With U.S. Government

Anthropic and OpenAI signed an agreement with the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (USAISI), allowing American national security officials to test their AI offerings before public release.

Key Details:
  • USAISI prioritizes advancing the science, practice, and adoption of AI safety across industries for national security, public safety, and individual rights.

  • It was launched as part of President Joe Biden’s executive order on safe, secure, and trustworthy AI, which focused on civil rights, industry regulation, and U.S. government investments in AI firms.

  • “Trustworthy AI is crucial for the technology’s positive impact. Our collaboration with USAISI leverages their wide expertise to rigorously test our AI models before widespread deployment,” said Jack Clark, Co-Founder and Head of Policy at Anthropic.

Why It’s Important:
  • The most popular AI firms in the world are granting the U.S. government access to AI offerings before public release, signaling potential safety improvements in the AI ecosystem.

  • As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it’s essential to build public trust in the technology and alleviate concerns about the potential negative consequences of AI.

AI IN HOLLYWOOD

🍿Grammy CEO Says Music Industry Fears AI

The Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. announced that the Grammy Awards would accept AI music.

“It’s a fine line, but that’s going to evolve. I hope we continue celebrating human creativity at the highest level,” Mason Jr. said. AI developments are already used in music, mainly in mastering sounds and equalizing pitches.

The most prominent concern in the music industry is ensuring people receive the correct approval to use an artist’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). In other words, how do we protect artists from the unauthorized use of their voices in AI systems?

The world’s biggest record labels recently filed lawsuits against Suno and Udio, alleging the AI startups illegally leveraged copyrighted content to train their music generators.

The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier explained: “Unlicensed services like Suno and Udio, which claim it’s ‘fair’ to copy an artist’s life work and exploit it for profit without consent, set back innovative AI for us all.”
