💵Amazon Spends $2.75 Billion on Anthropic

Amazon is making its largest outside investment in the company’s three-decade history as it looks to gain an edge in AI offerings.

Key Details:

• Amazon announced an initial $1.25 billion investment backing Anthropic in September, claiming it would invest up to $4 billion in the coming months.

• Now, Amazon has delivered on its claim with another $2.75 billion to support Anthropic, a startup building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.

• The startup’s flagship product is the Claude 3 model family, a set of state-of-the-art conversational chatbots for specific use cases, rivaling OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

• Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of AI at AWS, explained: “Generative AI is poised to be the most transformational technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will improve our customer experience.”

Why It’s Important:

• Over the past year, Anthropic has closed five funding deals totaling $7.3 billion. The term generative AI entered the business vernacular seemingly overnight, with the field experiencing a record $29.1 billion invested across nearly 700 deals in 2023.

On Tuesday, Apple announced that its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) will take place in June. The company is expected to reveal a comprehensive AI strategy during the keynote presentation.
