🦾Amazon Tests Digital Robots
During the Delivering the Future event, Amazon unveiled Agility’s bipedal robot called Digit, the first human-centric, multi-purpose robot designed to perform logistics tasks.
Key Details:
Last September, Amazon announced a $1B Industrial Revolution fund that supports emerging technologies to foster innovation and enhance customer experience.
Agility Robotics was one of the primary firms that received investments from Amazon, including Mantis Robotics, Modjoul, and Vimaan.
Agility is building bipedal or humanoid robots for warehouse work. Despite facing a competitive niche market, this startup has a significant competitive edge.
Digit can “move, grasp, and handle items in spaces and corners of warehouses in novel ways.” More importantly, its “size and shape are well suited for buildings designed for humans.”
Amazon believes Agility Robotics provides an opportunity to scale a mobile manipulator solution that seamlessly integrates with employee workflows.
Why It’s Important:
Amazon’s initial use for this technology will be to aid employees with tote recycling, a highly repetitive process of picking up and moving empty totes once inventory has been removed from them.
Amazon facilities currently utilize 750,000 robotic systems. Bipedal robots can be equipped with advanced vision systems and dexterous manipulators to efficiently pick and pack items of various shapes and sizes. This capability can streamline the order fulfillment process, improving order accuracy.

⚔️Baidu Announces AI Model Rivaling GPT-4
Chinese technology firm Baidu announced its latest AI chatbot, Ernie 4.0, claiming it rivals models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4.
Key Details:
Baidu’s CEO, Robin Lu, demonstrated Ernie 4.0 at the annual Baidu World Conference in Beijing. He described how the chatbot has achieved comprehension, reasoning, and memory to generate new content.
Li stated: “It’s not inferior to any aspect of GPT-4.” Ernie 4.0 could understand complex topics and instructions, apply reasoning and logic to statements, and generate answers to questions.
In a live demonstration, Li prompted Ernie 4.0 to produce advertising materials such as a marketing video and write a martial arts novel with unique characters. The AI model followed these complex verbal instructions, applied logic, and generated lengthy creative content.
The company’s Hong Kong-listed shares fell 1.7% following the announcement.
Why It’s Important:
Beijing-based Baidu launched as a search engine platform and, over the past decade, transitioned into the AI technology niche with autonomous driving and interactive generative AI tools.
Li plans to incorporate AI technology into Baidu’s search engine offerings, cloud services, and business intelligence products for enterprise customers.
