📡AMD Acquires Nod.ai Labs to Develop AI Software Ecosystem
AMD, a global company that specializes in manufacturing computer processors and graphic technologies, acquired Nod.ai to build an ecosystem of AI development tools tailored for AMD hardware.
Key Details:
Nod.ai, or Nod Labs, creates open-source technologies for “future AI systems” and prioritizes reinforcement learning: a system that “learns” through trial and error.
This acquisition is a strategic decision by AMD’s AI Growth Strategy Team to compete with Nvidia, which experienced a 100% revenue spike year over year for the quarter ending July 30, 2023. During the same period, AMD reported an 18% revenue decline, impacting sales and profits.
AMD SVP Vamsi Boppana stated: “The addition of the talented Nod.ai team accelerates our ability to advance open-source compiler technology and enable portable, high-performance AI solutions across the AMD product portfolio.”
Nod.ai was initially billed as an AI hardware company focusing on gesture recognition and motion-tracking wearables (e.g., Bluetooth-connected thumb rings for gamers to translate real-life hand gestures into gaming functions).
Why It’s Important:
Nvidia offers similar software-based solutions for accelerating AI models. However, they’re mostly close-sourced and designed to function with the company’s General Processing Units (GPUs).
AMD’s acquisition allows the company to access Nod.ai’s SHARK automation software, which streamlines the deployment of AI models across AMD’s diverse product range, from expansive data centers to compact edge devices.
The immediate value of this acquisition allows AMD to shape the AI hardware landscape by improving endpoints and exceeding functionality and service quality at a faster rate.

🎨Adobe Launches Next Generation of Firefly Models
Adobe unveiled the Adobe FireFly Image 2 Model, Adobe Firefly Vector Model, and Adobe Firefly Design Model at the Adobe Max Creativity Conference.
Key Details:
The FireFly Image 2 Model is a text-to-image tool that offers higher resolution and render quality for users. New features include Generative Match (i.e., enables users to upload a reference image to guide image styles), Photo Setting (i.e., enables photorealistic image quality with higher fidelity details like skin pores), and improved Text Prompt Capabilities that recognize more landmarks and cultural symbols.
The Firefly Vector Model combines Adobe’s vector graphic and generative AI expertise to power high-quality designs and illustrations and generate “human quality” vector and pattern outputs.
The Firefly Design Model leverages a text-to-template tool to create templates for print, social media, or website advertising in minutes.
Adobe’s new controls allow users to fine-tune AI outputs better and customize visual generations.
Why It’s Important:
Adobe and Canva continue to battle for AI design dominance. Adobe’s updated image models offer new ways to ideate, create, and communicate while improving creative workflows.
Adobe targets a niche market of professional designers while balancing artists’ desire for copyright and liability laws related to generative AI outputs.
