ANTHROPIC
⚙️Anthropic’s New AI Controls Your Computer
Anthropic announced an upgraded Claude 3.5 Sonnet, a new AI model called Claude 3.5 Haiku, and a new capability called Computer Use.
Key Details:
Claude 3.5 Sonnet is a balanced, intelligent, and high-endurance AI model designed for enterprise workloads. The upgrades equip it with “industry-leading software engineering skills.”
For example, it improved from 33.42% to 49.00% on the SWE-Bench Verified benchmark. This benchmark measures if AI systems can resolve real-world GitHub issues.
Claude 3.5 Haiku is a fast, compact, cost-effective AI model with near-instant responses.
Computer Use enables Anthropic’s Claude (i.e., a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT) to navigate your computer autonomously.
“It can use computers in basically the same way we do,” said Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s Chief Science Officer (CSO).
Why It’s Important:
So, what can AI agents do that humans can’t? The key advantage of AI agents lies in their ability to process information on a massive scale.
As AI researcher Stuart J. Russell explains, AI agents can do things “not because of their depth of understanding but because of their scale.”

📈OpenAI Hires First Chief Economist?!

OpenAI has hired Dr. Aaron “Ronnie” Chatterji to be the company’s first Chief Economist to better understand how AI developments influence the economy.
Key Details:
Dr. Chatterji is a Duke University professor of Business and Public Policy, a former Chief Economist at the Commerce Department under President Joe Biden, and a former Senior Economist under Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisors.
In this role, Dr. Chatterji will examine how AI developments influence economic growth and job creation. More specifically, the global economic impacts of building AI infrastructure and insights into long-term labor market trends.
“I’ve been focused on studying how innovation and entrepreneurship shape our economy and society,” said Dr. Chatterji. “Like electricity, AI holds the potential to revolutionize our economy by accelerating innovation and boosting productivity.”
Why It’s Important:
Dr. Chatterji helped coordinate the Biden Administration’s implementation of the 2022 CHIPS Act, which authorized roughly $280 billion in funding for building advanced computer chips in the U.S.
His economic understanding of datacenter requirements to fuel AI developments and his political connections could help OpenAI as they plan to create their own advanced computer chips.
AI RESEARCH
🔬UCLA Health’s AI Framework Analyzes Complex 3D Medical Scans
Researchers at UCLA Health unveiled “Slice Integration By Vision Transformer (SLIViT),” an AI framework that analyzes complex 3D medical scans to predict the likelihood of patients developing a disease.
“SLIViT” leverages Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to recognize patterns, make predictions, and analyze complex datasets in a way that mimics the human brain. ANNs train themselves by “performing repeated calculations on extremely large datasets examined and labeled by clinical experts.”
Unlike standard 2D medical scans that show length and width, 3D medical scans add depth. However, these volumetric medical scans require more skill, time, and attention from expert clinician specialists to interpret.
“SLIViT” matches the “manual expertise of clinical specialists while reducing time by a factor of 5,000.” In other words, it can accurately analyze a 3D medical scan in 1/5000th the time it would take an expert clinician specialist.
