đŠșAntitrust Probes into Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) are set to open antitrust investigations into Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia.
Key Details:
FTC Chair Lina Khan announced the inquiry in January during the agencyâs technology summit on AI, explaining: âOur study will shed light on whether investments and partnerships pursued by dominant companies risk distorting innovation and undermining fair competition.â
The FTC inquiry will examine how these investments impact the competitive landscape of emerging technologies by allowing established companies to acquire potential rivals.
Regulators will apply antitrust laws to these deals to determine if technology companies are buying competitors or leveraging acquisitions to expand into new markets.
For example, Microsoft invested $13 billion in OpenAI to leverage the startupâs AI models to develop products and services like Microsoft Copilot. In return, Microsoftâs stock achieved a $3 trillion market cap.
A recent lawsuit by Elon Musk alleges OpenAI has âset the founding agreement aflameâ in 2023 by transforming into a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.
Technology giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta are racing to integrate AI models to ensure they donât fall behind in a market predicted to reach $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.
Why Itâs Important:
Microsoftâs vice chair and president, Brad Smith, stated: âOur partnership with OpenAI has fostered AI innovation and competition while preserving independence for both companies. Thatâs very different from an acquisition.â
This inquiry is an effort by governing bodies to understand how companies use partnerships, investments, and acquisitions to expand their influence in AI markets.

AI RESEARCH
đAI Predicts New Antibiotics?!
Researchers published a study outlining the use of an AI algorithm to mine all the microbial diversity on earth, leading to the discovery of nearly a million new molecules.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) caused over 1.2 million deaths in 2019. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve over time and no longer respond to medicines.
Researchers developed the AI algorithm by leveraging AI models to analyze publicly available data on over 100,000 genomes (i.e., the entire set of DNA instructions found in a cell).
Then, the AI algorithm predicted which parts of the microbial genomes could potentially produce antibiotic compounds.
