đApple Acquires DarwinAI for GenAI iOS?!

Apple quietly acquired Canadian AI venture DarwinAI, which specializes in reducing the size of deep neural networks while increasing efficiency, to integrate GenAI into iOS 18.
Key Details:
DarwinAI raised over $15 million in funding across various rounds from investors to provide manufacturers with end-to-end AI solutions to increase production efficiency.
Apple acquired DarwinAI earlier this year and integrated a dozen employees into the AI division to explore on-device AI models for the iOS 18 and MacOS 15 operating systems.
Alexander Wong, Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Medical Imaging, joined Apple as a director of the AI division as part of the acquisition.
The âunder-the-radarâ acquisition is a strategic move by Apple CEO Tim Cook to âbreak new groundâ in AI this year and rival Microsoft.
Why Itâs Important:
Apple has lagged in releasing GenAI-powered features relative to competitors like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft.
This acquisition highlights Appleâs ambition to become a leader in on-device AI systems through powerful GenAI features without draining battery life or requiring a constant internet connection.

AI REGULATION
đȘđșThe EUâs Artificial Intelligence Act

The European Parliament passed the Artificial Intelligence Act, the worldâs most comprehensive set of AI regulations, to ensure safety and compliance with fundamental rights.
Key Details:
On Friday, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) endorsed the regulations with 523 votes in favor, 46 against, and 49 abstentions.
The act aims to safeguard fundamental rights, protect democracy, and promote environmental sustainability while boosting innovation to guarantee Europe becomes a leader in sustainable AI advancements.
Newly banned AI app features include biometric and facial recognition of sensitive characteristics (i.e., identity, sex, ethnicity, and age), social scoring, and voice cloning software.
Areas labeled âHigh-Risk AIâ include infrastructure, education, and employment. These areas will face strict obligations like risk assessment, transparency, and human oversight when implementing AI systems.
The rules will take effect in stages, with several âHigh-Risk AIâ areas being regulated as early as six months after the law enters into enforcement.
Why Itâs Important:
The Artificial Intelligence Act positions European lawmakers as the global standard for regulation. It allows citizens to examine the data used to train AI models, promoting transparency and communication between companies and users.
Text-to-image generation tools and conversational chatbots are considered âLimited-Risk AIâ and only require products like OpenAIâs ChatGPT to assure users know theyâre using AI models.
AI RESEARCH
đŠ AI Tackles Real-Time Cancer Surveillance?!
Researchers from the Department of Energyâs Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Louisiana State University developed Path-BigBird, an AI tool that processes millions of pathology reports to track cancer trends.
Path-BigBird was trained on over 2.7 million pathology reports collected by cancer registries. The AI tool outperforms traditional approaches to identifying cancer details, including the cancerâs category, location, and severity.
Mayanka Chandra Shekar, a research scientist in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at ORNL, explained: âOur goal is to see if we can automate the process of extraction for specific cancer site information for these pathology reports, transforming them into structured data for national-level cancer incidence reporting.â
