APPLE

🍏Apple Executives Explain Conservative AI Strategy

On Monday, a panel of Apple executives explained the strategy behind Apple Intelligence and how it will differentiate the company from current AI leaders.

Key Details:
  • Graig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, explained that the company is focused on how it can develop AI-enabled features that “help people in their daily lives.”

  • The panel explained that Apple is using AI advancements in favor of small tasks that can be done without burning up battery life.

  • John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, added: “We think the right approach is to have a series of different AI models at different sizes for different use cases.”

  • For example, Apple’s MM1 comprises dense AI models and Mixture-of-Experts (MOE) variants: several smaller AI models that are mini-experts on a specific task.

  • Apple is developing smaller on-device AI models to leverage personal data on a user’s iPhone for hyper-specific tasks related to appointments or location.

  • Apple is also ensuring the smaller AI models only perform tasks they excel at, rather than offering users an open-ended chatbot interface.

  • “We’re not trying to make a sentient being or some nonsense… We’re trying to apply it in the most practical and helpful way,” said Giannandrea.

Why It’s Important:
  • Many AI-enabled features Apple announced on Monday are similar to products or services announced this year by current AI leaders. Apple Intelligence can summarize documents, rewrite emails, and generate images.

  • However, Apple is slowly implementing AI add-ons to its existing product offerings to improve the iOS ecosystem.

  • For example, “Writing Tools” helps you rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across the iOS ecosystem, and “Gemmoji” allows you to create custom GenAI emojis tailored to your conversations.

ELON MUSK

Elon Musk threatens to ban Apple devices at his companies if the iPhone maker integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT into the iOS 18 and macOS 15 operating systems.

Key Details:
  • During the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC24), Apple unveiled a Siri upgrade that relies on OpenAI’s ChatGPT to access “broader world knowledge.”

  • In response, Musk posted a series of comments on X: “Don’t want it. Stop this creepy spyware.”

  • Musk also explained that Tesla, SpaceX, X, and xAI visitors must store their Apple devices in a “Faraday cage” before entering the facilities.

  • He also responded to a request for a “Grok Phone,” stating, “The Grok phone is inevitable.”

Why It’s Important:
  • Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and stepped down from the Board of Directors in 2018. He’s been a vocal critic of the startup and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

  • In March, Musk sued OpenAI for setting “the founding agreement aflame” in 2023 by transforming into a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

AI RESEARCH

🐶AI Learns to Speak Dog

Researchers at the University of Michigan manipulated an AI model to decode the meaning behind dog vocalizations.

Like humans, dogs rely on both verbal and non-verbal forms of communication:

  1. Audio Signals: Barking, whimpers, and growls.

  2. Visual Signals: Tongue flicks and tail movements.

  3. Postural Gestures: Cowering, crouching, or jumping.

  4. Tactile Cues: Teach new behaviors like sitting in exchange for treats and the word “yes!”

  5. Chemical Cues: Catch the sensations of fear, anger, and enthusiasm from human companions.

Over 74 dog vocalizations from different breeds and situational contexts were compiled into an AI model fine-tuned for dog vocal inputs.

The AI model could differentiate between dog breeds and connect barks to emotional contexts with 70% accuracy.
