🍎Apple’s $1B GenAI Product Plan
After being blindsided by the generative AI boom, Apple is mobilizing development programs to integrate AI into existing products like Siri, Messages, and Apple Music.
Key Details:
According to Bloomberg reports, Apple is on pace to spend $1B a year on developing generative AI products.
This spending arrives as Apple attempts to align with competitors who have already debuted cutting-edge AI products and features.
Apple’s future projects include more intelligent auto-completion in Messages, playlist creation in Apple Music, and code suggestions in Xcode to assist developers.
The company also plans to continue enhancing Ajax and AppleGPT, a Large Language Model (LLM) framework and chatbot platform.
Why It’s Important:
Apple is debating tradeoffs between on-device options and cloud processing for AI models.
Internal concerns among Apple executives remain around the company’s ability to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude 2.
Apple’s investment in generative AI projects will enhance the user experience and personalization with more intuitive interactions, personalized recommendations, and adaptive interfaces.

🎰FCC Investigates The Risk of AI-Enhanced Robots
Chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Jessica Rosenworcel, proposed a Notice of Inquiry to examine how generated robocalls fit under existing consumer protections.
Key Details:
The growing access to realistic AI-powered writing and synthetic voice tools has multiplied robocalling agencies.
The FCC is examining whether the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), which restricts telemarketing calls and automatic telephone dialing systems, empowers them to act against scammers and spammers leveraging AI models.
Rosenworcel acknowledged AI models present a powerful tool for accessibility and responsiveness in phone-based interactions: “While we’re aware of the challenges AI can present, there’s also significant potential to use this technology to benefit communication networks and their customers, including the fight against junk robocalls.”
Why It’s Important:
Any industry involving voice channels, like customer service, implements generative AI automation tools to augment human agents’ effectiveness.
The same technologies that make a tedious job more efficient can be deployed to trick individuals with tailored scams. For example, AI models can spoof caller ID information, making it appear as though a call originates from a legitimate source.
