🍎 Apple’s Working on Three New AI Wearables

Apple’s reportedly working on three new AI-powered wearables to bring screen-free assistance into everyday life.
Key Details:
The “AI Pendant” is described as a thin, flat, and circular aluminum disk that clips to clothing or hangs as a necklace. It’s equipped with one speaker, two cameras, and three microphones.
The “AI AirPods” feature two wide-angle RGB cameras that enable Siri to interact more contextually with the world around you. For example, identifying nearby restaurants as you walk by them for Siri to list their signature dishes as you listen to your favorite song.
The “AI Smart Glasses” won’t include an in-lens display, but rather rely on a dual-sensor visual intelligence array that captures photos and records videos, with CV interpreting, analyzing, and extracting visual data to support Siri’s ability to provide voice-driven assistance based on what you see.
Why It’s Important:
Apple aims to make Siri the “true hands-free controller” of your life, with the ability to see, hear, and speak in a more human-like way. Imagine yourself at a chaotic airport terminal, where rolling suitcases rattle as travelers surge by. Amid the chaos, you suddenly realize your backpack has vanished. You lift your iPhone 17, open the camera, and ask: “Hey Siri, where’s my backpack?” Suddenly, a small green box appears, locking onto it.
We’re starting to see a shift from touch to talk. In other words, the hands-free era is emerging, where technologies are built around voice commands and head movements. It’s all about fostering more immersive and integrated digital experiences that aim to be an ever-present, intuitive extension of ourselves to enhance the current moment.

🚪 AI Unlocks the Door Into Brainstem Wiring

The MEMP PhD Program developed “BSBT,” an AI-powered software that helps map exactly how the brainstem communicates with the nervous system.
Key Details:
The brainstem connects your brain to your spinal cord, serving as the nerve network for the electrical signals that carry information about everything you experience. For example, your brain generates electrical signals before you try to pick up a cup of coffee. The brainstem enables these electrical signals to reach your spinal cord and activate the muscles throughout your arms and hands to reach, grab, and lift.
The brainstem has historically been a significant challenge to map because of “white matter,” or tightly packed, fat-coated nerve fibers. This “white matter” prevents MRIs from producing detailed images of the millions of individual nerve pathways keeping you alive.
A single MRI pixel, called a “voxel,” might contain thousands of tightly packed, fat-coated nerve fibers. Because the MRI can’t distinguish between them individually, it captures a blurry image. “BSBT” leverages CNNs to deploy an architecture of specialized layers that detect visual patterns, such as shapes, figures, and objects, to accurately predict the hidden nerve pathways across the blurred regions.
Why It’s Important:
The brainstem is literally life’s control center. Knowing exactly how brainwaves travel through it can help diagnose and monitor diseases. Ultimately, decoding these hidden nerve pathways transforms a complex electrical storm into a clear map for life-saving medical intervention.
When a 29-year-old male suffered a serious brain injury and fell into a seven-month coma, this AI-powered software identified that his brainstem bundles had been “displaced,” not cut, moving him into the “rehabilitatable” patient category, which drastically altered his medical diagnosis.
