APPLE
🍎Apple Subtly Implements AI into Existing Products
As companies publicize significant transformations with tailored AI models, Apple subtly implements emerging technology to improve essential functions in new products.
Key Details:
During Apple’s iPhone 15 event, Apple didn’t mention AI advancements during product announcements, unlike rivals like Microsoft and Google.
Instead, Apple highlighted AI-related iPhone 15 improvements like enhanced noise cancellation, blurring portraits, and predictive text.
The Series 9 Watch featured improved data crunching ability through a four-core “Neural Engine” that can process machine learning tasks twice as quickly.
Why It’s Important:
Apple is presenting a conservative approach to AI by enhancing new features in existing products with machine learning hardware updates.
Instead of placing AI ambitions at the forefront of development like Microsoft or Google, Apple is implementing a subtle approach by constructing data sources and building AI models to rival market offerings in private.
MICROSOFT
🧬Microsoft Open Sources EvoDiff
This week, Microsoft revealed EvoDiff, a general-purpose framework that generates high-fidelity, diverse proteins given a protein sequence.
Key Details:
EvoDiff doesn’t require any structural information about the target protein, removing the most laborious step.
EvoDiff can be used as an open-source tool to create enzymes for new therapeutics, drug delivery methods, and industrial chemical reactions.
Microsoft’s Senior Researcher, Kevin Yang, explained: “We envision EvoDiff will expand capabilities in protein engineering beyond the structure-function paradigm and towards a programmable, sequence-first design.” In other words, EvoDiff only requires a protein sequence to design new proteins.
The EvoDiff framework is a 640-million-parameter model trained on data from different species and functional classes of proteins.
Why It’s Important:
Proteins, the natural molecules that carry out essential bodily functions, are the building blocks of all diseases.
Characterizing proteins can reveal disease mechanisms and generate new classes of drugs and therapeutics. However, the current process for designing proteins is costly. It entails developing a protein structure that performs a specific task within the body and then finding a protein sequence.
EvoDiff is an open-source framework that leverages AI to generate proteins solely based on their sequence. This revolutionary approach to protein engineering eliminates the need for structural information.
