The world’s biggest record labels filed lawsuits against Suno and Udio, alleging the companies illegally leveraged copyrighted content to train their music-generating AI models.

Key Details:

• Universal Music Group (UMG), Warner Music Group (WMG), and Sony Music Entertainment (SME) claim Suno and Udio trained their music-generating AI models on copyrighted records without permission or compensation.

• The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) leads the lawsuits, seeking up to $150,000 per infringed record, which could result in billions of dollars in damages.

• RIAA alleges that the music-generating AI model’s outputs mimic specific artists and popular songs.

• RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier explained: “Unlicensed services like Suno and Udio, which claim it’s ‘fair’ to copy an artist’s life work and exploit it for their profit without consent, set back the promise of innovative AI for us all.”

• Suno recently raised $125 million to build a future where anyone can make music, and Udio secured $10 million to develop an AI-powered “instant” music-making app.
