Boston Dynamics unveiled a fully electric humanoid robot designed for real-world applications, boasting impressive speed, dexterity, and balance.

Key Details:
  • Boston Dynamics unveiled the “Electric Altas” platform after announcing the retirement of “Hydraulic Atlas,” which relied on a pump to pressurize the electric energy into a hydraulic fluid that moved pistons in joints.

  • This video highlights the “Electric Atlas” pushing itself up from a prone position while rotating its head and torso with terminator-like movements.

  • The “Electric Atlas” will be tested in experiments with Hyundai’s factories, where it will physically move, inspect, and assemble various vehicle components.

Why It’s Important:
  • Boston Dynamics has accumulated over a decade of experience applying humanoid robots to real-world applications in demanding environments like factories or disaster zones.

  • Integrating that experience into the “Electric Atlas” roadmap offers exciting project milestones regarding agile hardware, precise movements, and extended operation times.

Stanford published the 2024 Index AI Report to provide unbiased, rigorously vetted, and broadly sourced data for policymakers, researchers, and executives.

Key Details:
  • Here are the top three takeaways from the 2024 Index AI Report:

    1. AI surpassed human reasoning across various benchmarks, including image classification, visual reasoning, and English understanding. However, it trails with complex tasks like competition-level mathematics.

    2. The training costs of state-of-the-art AI models have reached unprecedented levels. For example, OpenAI’s GPT-4 required $78 million of computing power to train, while Google’s Gemini Ultra required $191 million to operate.

    3. Generative AI investments skyrocketed, nearly octupling from 2022 to $25.5 billion. Significant players include OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face, and Inflection AI.

Why It’s Important:
  • The 2024 Index AI Report tracks, collects, distills, and visualizes data pertaining to AI developments with detailed estimates of AI training costs and public perceptions of the technology.

  • Stanford’s report clearly shows how far AI has come, showcasing advancements in image recognition and language comprehension.

AI RESEARCH

💊AI Accelerates Drug Design for Parkinson’s Treatment

Researchers from the University of Cambridge developed an AI-based strategy to identify compounds that block the clumping of alpha-synuclein, proteins that form abnormal deposits and cause Parkinson’s disease.

The researchers leveraged AI models to quickly screen a chemical library containing millions of compounds. Then, the most promising counter-clumping compounds are tested through lab procedures and fed back into the AI model for further refinement.

This refinement process identified five highly potent compounds that are hundreds of times more effective at preventing clumping than previous treatment options.
