OPENAI

🕸ChatGPT Releases Open Web Browsing

OpenAI’s ChatGPT can now browse the internet to provide users with current information and direct sources.

Key Details:
  • ChatGPT has been a powerful tool since its release in November 2022, but its knowledge has been limited to information until September 2021. This knowledge cutoff prevents ChatGPT from providing real-time information. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently addressed this pain point.

  • OpenAI announced on X (formerly Twitter) that ChatGPT “can now browse the internet to provide you with current and authoritative information, complete with direct links to sources.”

  • ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users can enable web browsing through Microsoft’s Bing search engine integration.

Why It’s Important:
  • In March, OpenAI debuted ChatGPT third-party plugins, including Browsing, a Microsoft Bing API and text-based browser, to search the web and summarize information for users. However, within a few days, OpenAI turned off this feature as users leveraged the tool to bypass publisher paywalls.

  • Now, browsing features return with enhanced offerings native to the ChatGPT platform. Removing the knowledge cutoff constraints makes this chatbot the ultimate replacement for traditional search engines.

  • This update raises concerns about the recent lawsuits against OpenAI’s violation of copyright laws and infringement of intellectual property rights.

🎨Adobe Launches Photoshop’s Web Version

Adobe officially launched the web version of Photoshop on Wednesday for users with paid plans after two years of beta testing.

Key Details:
  • Adobe Photoshop’s web version is equipped with Firefly-powered features such as Generative Expand (i.e., lets users expand an image and fill it with context based on prompts) and Generative Fill (i.e., add or remove objects while keeping the context of an image intact).

  • The toolbar is curated to optimize group-based workflows like reproducing images or selecting objects. Users can easily collaborate on files through sharing links.

  • Adobe doesn’t plan on offering a freemium version of Photoshop’s web version.

Why It’s Important:
  • By offering a web-based browser platform to access Photoshop features, Adobe provides a convenient, affordable, accessible, and collaborative platform.

  • Existing web versions of Adobe products offer several advantages. For example, Adobe Acrobat simplifies creating, editing, and signing PDFs without installing desktop software. Adobe Illustrator Draw makes it easier to create and share vector graphs.

  • Adobe’s track record of web-based products speaks for itself. They always capture many users and provide seamless tools to streamline workflows.

🍎Sam Altman Explores AI Hardware With Former Apple Designer

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, former Apple designer Jony Ive, and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son are in advanced talks to build AI hardware.

Key Details:
  • Sam Altman has partnered with Jony Ive’s company LoveFrom, a creative collection of designers, architects, musicians, filmmakers, writers, engineers, and artists, to create ChatGPT’s first consumer device.

  • Altman and Ive have scheduled several brainstorming sessions to identify the process required to design a device representing the “iPhone of artificial intelligence.”

  • SoftBank CEO Masayoshi has been involved in these discussions and offered financial support of over $1B in funding and access to ARM, the semiconductor chip designer.

Why It’s Important:
  • Altman also funds Humane, a platform that creates and sells consumer hardware, which provides OpenAI with physical AI integrations. Significant Research and Development (R&D) is funneling into AI hardware projects.

  • Altman seems determined to make AI more efficient and robust by designing specialized hardware that fulfills tasks quicker than general-purpose CPUs.
