Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) recently discovered that OpenAI’s new AI models have reignited ChatGPT’s growth.

Key Details:

• When OpenAI’s ChatGPT launched in November 2022, it reached 100 million active users in just two months.

• But, global monthly visits flattened between March 2023 and April 2024. It took nine months for ChatGPT to grow from 100 million weekly active users in November 2023 to 200 million weekly active users by August 2024.

• Now, growth has come roaring back. It took less than six months for OpenAI to double the weekly active users again! ChatGPT reached 400 million weekly active users by February 2025.

Why It’s Important:

• Initial consumer demand for ChatGPT was driven more by novelty. In other words, consumers were interested in trying out the conversational chatbot but weren’t sure how it would fit into their daily lives.

• 43.75% of OpenAI’s 400 million weekly active users access ChatGPT through mobile devices, highlighting that mobile devices are critical to driving the rapid adoption of AI models.

⚙️CoD Enables LLMs to Think Faster by Writing Less

Zoom Communications developed “Chain of Draft (CoD),” which enables LLMs to solve complex problems with shorter, denser reasoning steps.

Key Details:

• Chain-of-Thought (CoT) is a popular technique that encourages LLMs to think longer by generating “step-by-step” explanations when solving complex problems.

• But CoT can be wordy, requiring more computational resources and causing longer response times. There’s a crucial nuance: thinking longer doesn’t always mean thinking better.

• To address this issue, CoD instructs LLMs to think quicker by generating shorter, denser explanations when solving complex problems.

Why It’s Important:

• Just like humans, LLMs can become overwhelmed by excessive information. At a certain point, adding more steps doesn’t necessarily improve accuracy.

• CoD enables LLMs to solve complex problems with as little as 7.6% of the words required by CoT. Simply put, CoD avoids unnecessary words.

🏛️AI Will Revoke U.S. Visas of Foreign Student Who Appear “Pro-Hamas”

The U.S. Department of State (DOS) will use AI-powered tools to revoke the U.S. Visas of foreign exchange students who openly support the Islamic Resistance Movement or Islamic Militant Group Hamas.

The “Catch and Revoke” effort will include AI-assisted reviews of tens of thousands of social media accounts belonging to foreign exchange students with U.S. Visas. The AI-assisted reviews will specifically look for evidence of alleged terrorist sympathies expressed after Hamas killed 1,200 citizens in Israel on October 7th, 2023.

This decision is highly controversial, with proponents believing this helps address national security concerns in the U.S. and opponents raising issues of free speech violations.
