Coatue Management, an investment firm focused on turning big ideas into world-shaping companies, is raising $1 billion to fund AI-focused startups.
Key Details:
Coatue Management has nearly $50 billion in Assets Under Management (AUM), which refers to the total market value of the investments managed by Coatue Management.
Coatue Management claims, āAI is the next Technology Supercycle that has the potential to improve our world meaningfully.ā The investment firm has backed over 50 AI-related companies in the past decade.
A Technology Supercycle refers to a period of sustained growth and technological innovation that can last for years or decades.
Founder of Coatue Management Philippe Laffont believes AI advancements will revolutionize various industries and shape the future of human society.
In an interview at the 2024 Bloomberg Invest Summit, Laffont explained that he believes robots powered by artificial brains will drive the next wave of AI developments. āWhat happens when you put an artificial brain inside a robot that lives side-by-side with humans?ā
Why Itās Important:
Unlike anything weāve seen before, AI adoption is happening rapidly among Big Tech companies, already impacting our economy.
Over 300,000 AI models have been shared on Hugging Face, over 50% of trending GitHub repositories have been about AI, and over 8,000 AI apps have already been created.

Metaās former Head of Hardware and Lead on Augmented Reality (AR) projects is joining OpenAI to build robotics applications and create consumer hardware.
Key Details:
Caitlin Kalinowski is a mechanical engineer and AR hardware expert who previously oversaw the impressive creation of Metaās Orion ARxAI Smart Glasses.
Theyāre equipped with fluid voice controls, eye tracking, and hand tracking, as well as paired with a Neural Wristband.
The Neural Wristband uses Electromyography (EMG) to interpret the electrical signals produced by muscles, translating hand movements into digital commands.
Kalinowski was also the Technical Lead and Product Design Lead at Apple, working on the 2012 MacBook Air, 2012 MacBook Pro, and the 2013 Mac Pro.
āIn my new role, Iāll initially focus on OpenAIās robotics efforts to help bring AI into the physical world,ā she said in a post on LinkedIn.
Why Itās Important:
Kalinowski will likely work alongside her former colleague and legendary Apple designer Jony Ive, who confirmed heās building AI-powered devices for OpenAI.
The AI-powered devices wonāt resemble traditional mobile devices like smartphones, tablets, or laptops and will likely integrate with OpenAIās conversational chatbots.

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley (i.e., āUC Berkeleyā) leveraged OpenAIās GPT-4o (āoā for āomniā) to teach a $120 robot arm to clean spills.
They collected a diverse dataset of human actions related to cleaning spills. This diverse dataset taught the AI model about sponges, spilled liquids, and wiping motions. The AI model was also trained to recognize visual instructions like pointing at spilled liquids and understand verbal commands like āclean up the spilled liquids.ā
Researchers provided the $120 robot arm with roughly 100 demonstrations on cleaning spills with visual instructions and verbal commands. The $120 robot arm was trained using Reinforcement Learning (RL), which teaches it to make decisions that result in the best outcomes. It mimics the ātrial-and-errorā process humans use to learn, where actions that lead to desired outcomes are reinforced.
