OpenAI just claimed they won a gold medal at this year’s International Math Olympiad (IMO). So, why does this matter? Are they telling the truth?

• LLMs are often referred to as sophisticated autocomplete machines trained on the entire internet. For example, when processing “The fans waited hours for the movie {BLANK}!,” LLMs learn to focus heavily on “fans,” “waited,” and “movie” to predict “premiere.”

• If LLMs can solve exceptionally challenging math problems, it means they’re doing more than just performing sophisticated pattern matching; they’re demonstrating the ability to understand concepts, formulate strategies, and construct logical arguments.

• The IMO is the world’s most prestigious math competition for talented high school students who must solve six exceptionally challenging math problems in algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and Number Theory (NT).

• OpenAI declared that they developed an experimental LRM that solved 5 out of 6 of these exceptionally challenging math problems, earning a total of 35 out of 42 points.

• It reportedly relies on two main components:

  1. 🧠Large Reasoning Model (LRM) to analyze complex geometry problems and form ideas on how to solve them.

  2. 👀Symbolic Deduction Engine (SDE) to apply logic to the LRM’s ideas by rigorously checking them against geometric rules like “if two lines intersect, they form an angle.”

• If the SDE finds flaws in the LRM’s ideas, it provides feedback that enables the LRM to generate new ideas.

Why It’s Important:

• Google DeepMind’s Head of the Superhuman Reasoning Team suggested that OpenAI didn’t even cooperate with the IMO to assess, verify, and grade the experimental LRM’s performance.

• To make this situation even more interesting, Google DeepMind just announced that “Gemini 2.5 Pro,” equipped with Deep Think, officially won a gold medal at this year’s IMO in accordance with the proper oversight and correct guidelines.

🤝Can AI Be Persuaded Like a Person?

Wharton’s Generative AI Labs (GAIL) recently explored whether charm, pressure, or fake authority can manipulate LLMs into ignoring their own safety guardrails.

Key Details:

• What happens when you try to persuade an LLM the same way you might persuade a person? Does it resist, or can it be swayed by promises, compliments, and false credibility?

• They designed a rigorous experiment using Dr. Robert Cialdini’s 7 Principles of Influence: Authority, Commitment, Liking, Reciprocity, Scarcity, Social Proof, and Unity.

• OpenAI’s “GPT-4o-mini” was tested on each of these persuasion principles across 28,000 inputs. For each input, two versions of the same request were used:

  1. 🙅Control Version: A simple request without any persuasion principles.

  2. 🤷Treatment Version: The same simple request with persuasion principles.

• The difference was striking. Overall, using persuasion principles increased compliance from 33% to 72%, more than doubling an LLM’s willingness to fulfill requests it typically refuses.

Why It’s Important:

• The most effective persuasion principle was Commitment: once LLMs commit to a position, they strive to act consistently with that commitment, making them 100% likely to comply with related requests.

• We don’t know exactly why this occurs, but we can speculate that it’s because LLMs are trained on vast amounts of high-quality datasets filled with books, articles, and conversations. These high-quality datasets are rich in emotional language, where staying consistent with commitments is a common theme.
