🚖Everything Announced at Tesla’s “We, Robot” Event

Did you miss Tesla’s “We, Robot” event? No worries; we’ve got you covered! Here’s an easy-to-digest breakdown of everything that was announced:

Key Details:
  • The “We, Robot” event was centered around the future of autonomy. Tesla built five neighborhoods: Westworld, Metropolis, New York, TSLA Theater, and TSLA Merch.

  • Anyone could ride to any of the five neighborhoods in a Cybercab (i.e., “Robotaxi”) and crack jokes with the Optimus-Gen 2 bartender.

1. Cybercab Reveal (i.e., “Robotaxi”)
  • The Cybercab boasts a futuristic Cyberpunk design with butterfly wing doors and a compact cabin without a steering wheel or pedals that can host two passengers.

  • Tesla plans to initially deploy Cybercabs in Austin, TX, and San Francisco, CA, by 2027. It’ll cost as little as $0.20 per mile compared to the $1.00 per mile for city buses.

  • “This is a very big deal, said Tesla CEO Elon Musk. “It’ll save lives, a lot of lives.”

2. Cybervan Reveal (i.e., “Robovan”)
  • The Cybervan also boasts a futuristic Cyberpunk design with large sliding doors, no windshields, and a robust cabin without a steering wheel or pedals that can host up to 20 passengers.

  • “The Robovan is going to solve high-density problems,” said Musk. “So, if you need to transport a sports team to games,” it’s cost-effective at $0.10 or $0.50 per mile.

3. Optimus-Gen 2 Improvements
  • Optimus-Gen 2 is a humanoid robot that autonomously performs unsafe, repetitive, or tedious tasks.

  • Tesla leverages Neural Networks (NNs) with End-to-End Learning to build software stacks that enable Optimus-Gen 2 to balance, navigate, and interact with the physical world.

  • NNs are an AI framework designed to mimic the human brain. In this case, they’re trained on a large dataset filled with balancing, navigating, and interacting data.

  • End-to-End Learning enables NNs to perform these actions from the raw data without requiring explicit instructions from programmers.

  • Musk added, “Optimus-Gen 2 is designed to be an extremely capable humanoid robot in very high volumes. Ultimately, in millions of units.”

4. Tesla Vision Updates
  • Tesla Vision uses a network of cameras, NNs, and Computer Vision to self-park, auto-lane change, and navigate traffic. It’s designed to replicate how human vision functions with our eyes and brain.

  • Computer Vision enables computers to interpret, analyze, and extract visual data. The NNs process the visual data to handle turns, avoid obstacles, or adjust speed.

  • Tesla Vision aims to replace Ultrasonic Sensors, LiDAR, and RADAR. However, critics note that Tesla Vision can be affected by poor weather conditions.

  • Musk asserts that humans “drive with their eyes,” so autonomous vehicles only need vision.

5. Full Self-Driving (FSD) Announcements
  • FSD is an advanced driving assistant that helps your Tesla with steering, accelerating, and braking with minimal driver intervention.

  • Tesla updated the Vision-Based Attention Monitoring, which uses the vehicle’s interior camera to ensure the driver is actively paying attention to the road.

6. Tesla Master Plan Part Four
  • Musk hinted at Tesla Master Plan Part Four throughout the “We, Robot” event. He always releases a Tesla Master Plan when there’s a significant shift in the company’s direction.

  • Tesla Master Plan Part Four most likely addresses today’s expensive, unsafe, and unsustainable transportation infrastructure.

  • It’ll call for the removal of parking lots since they won’t be needed with autonomous vehicles. Imagine all the space that will free up!

🎙Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Says Worries About AI Are “Complete B.S.”

The “AI prophet” Yann LeCun doesn’t believe AI systems are actually on the verge of becoming intelligent.

Key Details:
  • LeCun, Meta’s Chief AI Scientist and winner of the prestigious A.M. Turing Award, posted on X: “Before urgently figuring out how to control AI systems much smarter than us, we need to have the beginning of a hint of a design for an AI system smarter than a house cat.”

  • He elaborated on his opinions during a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal when asked about AI systems becoming smart enough to threaten humanity, saying, “You’re going to have to pardon my French, but that’s complete B.S.”

Why It’s Important:
  • LeCun argues that today’s AI systems lack basic “house cat” capabilities, such as reasoning, planning, and long-term memory.

  • In his view, conversational chatbots only demonstrate that “you can manipulate language and not be smart.”

📊The New “MLE-Bench” Benchmark for AI Agents

Image Source: OpenAI/“MLE-Bench: Evaluating AI Agents on Machine Learning (ML) Engineering”/Screenshot

OpenAI introduced “MLE-Bench,” a benchmark for measuring how well AI agents perform at Machine Learning (ML) Engineering tasks.

ML is a framework that leverages data to recognize patterns and make predictions without explicit instruction from developers.

ML Engineering is the discipline of building, deploying, and maintaining ML frameworks to solve real-world problems.

OpenAI curated 75 ML Engineering questions from Kaggle, the world’s largest data science community. These questions covered AI model training, data preparation, and experimentation.

Then, they established human performance benchmarks on these questions from the Kaggle Rankings, which rank community members on their performance across various ML Engineering tasks.

OpenAI o1-preview with AIDE Scaffolding achieved at least a bronze medal in 16.9% of competitions. AIDE Scaffolding temporarily supports AI models to help them learn new skills.
