Eight established U.S. newspapers filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing the technology giants of illegally leveraging copyrighted articles to train AI models.

Key Details:
  • The New York Daily News, The Chicago Tribune, The Orlando Sentimental, The Sun Sentinel of Florida, The San Jose Mercury News, The Denver Post, The Orange County Register, and the St. Paul Pioneer Press all filed a complaint in federal court in the U.S. Southern District of New York.

  • In the complaint, the publications accuse OpenAI and Microsoft of leveraging millions of copyrighted articles without permission to train AI models, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot.

  • The publications also argue that these conversational chatbots compete with them as news sources by using their copyrighted content.

  • An OpenAI spokesperson commented: “We take great care in our products and design process to support news organizations.”

Why It’s Important:
  • The OpenAI phrase for 2024 is “another day, another lawsuit against OpenAI.”

  • OpenAI claims training AI models using publicly available internet materials is fair use, as supported by academics, startups, and authors.

  • OpenAI also claims they offer a simple opt-out process for publishers to prevent the startup from scraping their data.

  • As pressure mounts on AI firms over the content used to train their products, OpenAI affirms that current copyright laws make creating AI systems like ChatGPT impossible without accessing existing materials.

Anthropic, an AI safety and research startup that builds reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems, launched a new “Team Plan” and iOS app to compete with OpenAI.

Key Details:
  • The “Team Plan” allows ambitious teams across industries to create workspaces that leverage Anthropic’s Claude 3 for customer interactions, content moderation, and cost-saving tasks.

  • The “Team Plan” costs $30 per user per month and requires a minimum of five users.

  • The Claude iOS app is available on the App Store and offers various features, including:

    1. Seamless Syncing: pick up where you left off across devices.

    2. Vision Capabilities: upload files for real-time image analysis, contextual understanding, and mobile-centric use cases.

Why It’s Important:
  • According to Pitchbook, the generative AI field has exploded over the past year, with a record $29.1 billion invested across 700 deals in 2023, a 260% increase in deal value from the previous year. Amazon invested over $4 billion in Anthropic to gain a competitive edge in AI offerings.

  • Anthropic’s new iOS app expands the user base and makes it easier for iPhone users to interact with Claude 3 through a mobile-friendly interface.

AI RESEARCH

🚑AI-Trained Alert System Saves Patients

Researchers at the National Defense Medical Center (NDMC) in Taiwan conducted a study evaluating the ability of an AI-enabled electrocardiogram (ECG) to identify hospitalized patients with a high risk of mortality.

The study was a multisite randomized controlled trial involving 39 physicians and 15,965 patients. The AI-enabled ECG was trained on over 450,00 ECG tests and survival data.

The AI-enabled ECG reduced overall deaths by 31% and death by heart issues by over 90%. Eric Topol, Director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute (SRTI) in California, explained: “It’s very rare for any medication to produce a 31% reduction in mortality.”
