Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced that xAI’s Grok chatbot, rivaling OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will transition into an open-source AI model.

Key Details:

  • Musk posted on X: “This week, @xAI will open-source Grok.”

  • In 2023, Musk debuted xAI’s Grok on X, allowing Premium+ subscribers to interact with the witty chatbot that leverages real-time data from X to answer user queries.

  • Open-source software is code that is designed to be publicly accessible. Anyone can see, modify, and distribute the code, promoting a decentralized and collaborative environment.

  • Last week, Musk sued OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, alleging he engaged in a breach of contract by transitioning from an open-source, non-profit company to a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

  • In response, OpenAI published email exchanges exposing how Musk wanted to merge OpenAI with Tesla to develop a for-profit model because “even raising millions won’t be enough” to achieve their mission of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Why It’s Important:

A new study in Ghana discovered that students who use Rori, an AI-powered conversational math tutor, achieve significantly higher math scores than students who take regular math lessons.

The study, which lasted eight months, included 1,000 students across schools in Ghana. The students were divided into two groups, with one group receiving weekly sessions with Rori in addition to standard math lessons.

Rori is accessible through basic mobile devices on low-bandwidth data networks, supporting personalized learning for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
