During Tesla’s 2024 Q1 Earnings Call, Elon Musk outlined his ambitious goal to transform Tesla into a “leader in AI and robotics.” However, internal emails from Nvidia executives show Musk favoring X and xAI over Tesla.

Key Details:
  • Musk planned to increase the number of Tesla’s Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs from 35,000 to 85,000 by the end of 2024.

  • He also posted on X that Tesla would spend over $10 billion in 2024 for “combined training and inference AI.”

  • However, internal emails from Nvidia executives suggest Musk presented an exaggerated picture of Tesla’s procurement of Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs to shareholders.

  • Instead, he diverted a $500 million shipment reserved for Tesla to his social media company X and AI startup xAI.

  • X and xAI are tightly intertwined. In a post on X, Musk wrote: “X Corp. investors will own 25% of xAI.” Also, xAI leverages X’s data centers to train its AI models.

  • Ganesh Venkataraman, Tesla’s Head of “Dojo” Hardware and the Senior Director of Autopilot Hardware, recently left the company after delays with “Dojo” hardware.

  • “Dojo” is Tesla’s supercomputer designed for computer vision video processing and recognition to train the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system.

  • Musk promised shareholders a $500 million “Dojo” supercomputer in Buffalo, New York.

  • Musk also recently laid off 10% of Tesla’s global workforce of 140,000 people.

Why It’s Important:
  • By diverting over 12,000 Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPU clusters intended for Tesla to X and xAI, Musk currently favors his collection of AI-centric companies over Tesla to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic in developing GenAI products.

  • Tesla’s “Dojo” hardware is crucial for training AI frameworks behind the company’s FSD technology. Delays in “Dojo” developments cast doubt on the near-term future of Tesla’s self-driving ambitions.

NAVER LABS

South Korean technology firm Naver Labs shared a video of the company’s in-office autonomous Starbucks, which deploys over 100 “Rookie” robots to deliver coffee and croissants to employees.

Key Details:
  • The autonomous wheeled “Rookie” robots navigate the building’s 36 floors to deliver coffee and croissants to employees.

  • The “Rookie” robots are equipped with dual-armed “Ambidex” features that allow them to manipulate objects and perform tasks similar to humans.

  • “Rookie” robots are connected to Naver Lab’s cloud-based management system called ARC throughout the building.

  • The company describes ARC as a “collective brain” that offers real-time management of the “Rookie” robots.

  • The “Rookie” robots rely on ARC for collision avoidance as well as coordination and pathfinding algorithms to streamline the company’s autonomous transportation systems.

  • Naver Labs also developed “RoboPort,” a dedicated elevator system that enables the “Rookie” robots to move efficiently between floors.

Why It’s Important:
  • Efficiency: The “Rookie” robots can navigate 36 floors to deliver Starbucks orders, saving employees time and effort.

  • Scalability: Over 100 robots can handle a large number of orders simultaneously, unlike a limited number of baristas and delivery drivers.

AI RESEARCH

🌂Microsoft’s Weather Forecasting Foundation Model

Microsoft researchers unveiled Aurora, a 1.3 billion parameter foundation model for higher-resolution forecasting of weather and atmospheric processes.

Foundation models are large, powerful AI models trained on massive amounts of general data (e.g., text, code, images, video, and audio). They’re designed to be versatile datasets that can be fine-tuned to build various AI applications.

Aurora is trained on over a million hours of diverse weather and climate situations, enabling it to understand atmospheric dynamics comprehensively.

Aurora can generate a 5-day global air pollution prediction in under 60 seconds and produce a 10-day global forecast at high resolutions, surpassing specialized AI weather systems.
