X ECOSYSTEM

🗞Elon Musk’s New “Stories” Feature on X

Elon Musk shared his plans to develop a new “Stories” feature on X that leverages AI algorithms to summarize and blend breaking news with real-time social media reactions.

Key Details:
  • xAI’s Grok-1.5 on the X platform will analyze and summarize thousands of users’ posts to generate real-time news summaries.

  • xAI’s Grok 1.5 will display a running list of headlines and integrate social reactions to develop breaking news.

  • Ben Smith, Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of Semafor, explained: “That’s actually what I used to rely on Twitter for—news and commentary.”

Why It’s Important:
  • Building real-time news summaries by leveraging X’s content instead of the articles themselves distances the social media platform from copyright lawsuits by established U.S. newspapers.

  • The new “Stories” feature on X could transform how we consume news by offering breaking stories with a social pulse that enables snapshots of public sentiment as events unfold.

🪖AI-Controlled Fighter Jet Flies U.S. Air Force Secretary

An AI-controlled F-16 fighter jet flew U.S. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall across the California desert, marking one of the most significant advances in military aviation.

Key Details:
  • Last month, Kendall outlined his plans to fly an AI-controlled F-16 fighter jet called “Vista” to the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee’s defense panel.

  • “Vista” flew Kendall with lightning-fast, responsive, and robust maneuvers that surpassed 550 miles an hour, applying pressure five times the force of gravity to his body.

  • Flying alongside “Vista” was a human-piloted F-16 fighter jet. The fighter jets raced within 1,000 feet of each other while performing air-to-air combat tactics.

  • “A computer won’t get tired or scared and will perform as close to a perfect maneuver as it can, whereas humans will always have some variability,” Kendall said.

  • Kendall claims there will always be human oversight within the AI algorithms when initiating autonomous weapon tasks.

Why It’s Important:
  • Arms control experts and humanitarian groups are worried that AI-enabled military assets will accelerate military decisions, reducing human input.

  • They also fear that when humans are under extreme stress, they’ll surrender to the AI algorithm rather than contemplate decisions to reduce the mental burden of the outcome.

  • The military’s shift to AI-enabled fighter jets improves security, reduces long-term costs, and enhances strategic capabilities.

AI RESEARCH

💊AI Estimates Drug Treatment Effectiveness?!

Ohio State University (OSU) researchers designed CURE, an AI model that emulates randomized clinical trials to estimate drug treatment effectiveness accurately.

CURE was front-loaded with millions of de-identified patient profiles from employers, health plans, and hospitals.

The OSU researchers initially pre-trained CURE on a massive cache of general data. Then, they fine-tuned the AI model with information addressing specific health conditions and treatments.

Ruoqi Liu, a computer science and engineering PhD student in Zhang’s lab, explained: “Our AI model could help identify a small group of candidate drugs that are effective to treat a disease, allowing clinicians to conduct randomized clinical trials on a limited scale.”
