👨‍⚖️Elon Musk Sues OpenAI Over Contract Breach

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is suing OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, for abandoning the startup’s founding mission to develop AI models that benefit humanity.

Key Details:

• The lawsuit was filed on Thursday in the California Superior Court in San Francisco, alleging OpenAI CEO Sam Altman engaged in a breach of contract.

• In 2015, Altman approached Musk to create an open-source, non-profit company to explore how Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could benefit humanity.

• At the time, Musk believed Alphabet’s Google was developing AGI for profit and would be a net negative to humankind.

• In response, he collaborated with Altman and named the startup “OpenAI” to emphasize the startup’s open-source structure of making its research and technology publicly available.

• The lawsuit alleges OpenAI has “set the founding agreement aflame” in 2023 by transforming into a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

• In 2024, Microsoft’s stock achieved a $3 trillion market cap by leveraging OpenAI’s flagship GPT-4 model to develop Microsoft products.

Why It’s Important:

• Musk’s lawyers explained the lawsuit is “to compel OpenAI to adhere to the Founding Agreement and return to its mission to develop AGI for the benefit of humanity, not to personally benefit the individual Defendants and the largest technology company in the world.”

• Microsoft is facing scrutiny from EU antitrust regulators over its $13 billion investment in OpenAI and recent $16 million partnership with French startup Mistral AI to offer “new commercial opportunities” in global markets.

🤯Klarna Saves $40 Million With AI Assistant

Klarna, a company that offers flexible payments and lightning-fast checkouts, launched a customer service chatbot that helped the company achieve a $40 million profit improvement.

Key Details:

• The AI assistant powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 model has completed over 2.3 million conversations, or two-thirds of Klarna’s customer service chats, doing the equivalent work of 700 full-time agents.

• The customer service chatbot was more effective in errand resolution, causing a 25% drop in repeat inquiries and resolving errands in less than 2 minutes.

• It’s available 24/7 in 23 markets in more than 35 languages.

Why It’s Important:

• Klarna laid off 700 employees in 2022 and will no longer hire new staff outside of prompt engineers due to the cost-saving efficiency and effectiveness of AI models.

• Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, explained: “Klarna is at the forefront among our partners in AI adoption and practical application. Together, we’re unlocking the vast potential for AI to boost productivity and improve our day-to-day lives.”

🔬AI Tackles Prostate Cancer

Cancer Research UK and Prostate Cancer Research published a study revealing two unique prostate cancer subtypes called evotypes.

The researchers analyzed the DNA of prostate cancer samples from 159 patients using whole genome sequencing to examine the entire genetic material of the patients.

Then, they applied neural networks (i.e., a machine learning program or model that formulates decisions like the human brain) to compare the DNA of the different samples.

Colin Cooper, a professor from the UAE’s Norwich Medical School, explained: “Until now, we thought that prostate cancer was a singular disease. With AI advancements, we’ve shown two different subtypes at play.”

These findings could allow medical professionals to diagnose prostate cancer better and provide tailored treatment plans to improve recovery.
