Scammers are utilizing AI-enabled resources to alter their appearance and build fake digital footprints to apply for remote job postings.

Key Details:
  • They’re leveraging advanced AI models at almost every step in the job application process to create the perfect job candidate by generating professional headshots, LinkedIn profiles, and fake resumes.

  • Once these scammers are hired, they steal the company’s sensitive information or disrupt the company’s operations by internally planting malware (i.e., malicious hardware).

  • For example, when a voice authentication startup called Pindrop posted a job for a remote senior engineering role, a scammer utilized Deepfake Technology to mask his true identity during the video-based job interview.

Why It’s Important:
  • These incidents aren’t isolated events. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) uncovered multiple schemes of North Korean Nationals utilizing AI-enabled resources to generate fake identities and secure U.S.-based remote jobs.

  • AI advancements are making it more accessible for scammers to perform malicious actions, with job-related scams up 118% since 2023. Americans have lost over $108 million to AI-powered scams in the past year.

    1. Visual Data: Embedded RGB-D Cameras capture real-time visual information from a visually impaired individual’s surroundings, such as Red, Green, and Blue colors, as well as Depth.

    2. Data Processing: The Visual Data is processed by AI algorithms, which detect obstacles, identify objects, and create spatial layouts.

    3. Feedback Mechanisms: The processed data is delivered through bone-conducting headphones and artificial electronic skin patches that vibrate to indicate directions for moving forward, backward, left, or right.

  • The AI-enabled smart glasses boast a quick processing time of 200 milliseconds (ms), from capturing Visual Data to initiating Feedback Mechanisms.

  • “It can partially replace the eyes,” said Leilei Gu, an AI Researcher at SJTU. “It offers alternative avenues to enhance the Quality of Life (QoL) for individuals with visual impairments.”
