🦺Former OpenAI Safety Co-Leader Joins Anthropic

Jan Leike, former co-leader of OpenAI’s Superalignment Team, recently joined rival Anthropic to ensure AI models much smarter than humans follow human intent.

Key Details:

• OpenAI’s Superalignment Team aimed to develop processes and safeguards that focused on governing, steering, and reducing the long-term risks of “superintelligent” AI models.

• OpenAI initially dedicated over 20% of computing resources to managing the security, safety, monitoring, preparedness, and social impact of “superintelligent” AI models.

• However, OpenAI quickly redirected computational resources intended for the Superalignment Team to the startup’s product strategy.

• Leike resigned as co-leader of the Superalignment Team and posted on X: “Safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products.”

• Now, Leike has joined forces with Anthropic to build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.

Why It’s Important:

• Leike’s new team will work on scalable oversight, weak-to-strong generalization, and automated alignment research.

• Leike will initially prioritize weak-to-strong generalization, which is when a less powerful AI model (e.g., “weak supervisor”) guides a more powerful AI model (e.g., “strong learner”) to achieve better generalization on new tasks.

🤝OpenAI + PwC = Enterprise AI?

PwC signed an agreement with OpenAI to offer ChatGPT Enterprise to employees and clients. OpenAI also inked deals with The Atlantic and Vox Media to establish media partnerships.

Key Details:

• PwC is a Big Four accounting firm that employs nearly 365,000 people with over 178,000 clients globally, including 87% of the Fortune Global 500 companies.

• The agreement will expand PwC’s technology ecosystem by integrating GenAI into daily workflows and scaling AI capabilities across companies to “help drive accelerated impact for clients.”

• OpenAI also inked deals with The Atlantic and Vox Media to deliver summaries of news events in ChatGPT.

• The Atlantic and Vox Media articles will be discoverable within OpenAI’s ChatGPT. User queries surrounding The Atlantic and Vox Media will include attribution and direct links to read the full articles.

• OpenAI’s licensing deals include these content providers: Shutterstock, The Associated Press, Axel Springer, Le Monde, Prisa Media, The Atlantic, and Vox Media.

Why It’s Important:

• In January, The Information reported that OpenAI offers publishers between $1 million and $5 million a year to access archived articles for training AI models.

• OpenAI’s annual run rate (i.e., a measure of one month’s revenue multiplied by 12) reached the $2 billion revenue mark in December 2023.

• So, OpenAI’s long-term competitive advantage is funneling revenue into pursuing licensing agreements that fuel data experimentation and improve the user experience, creating a barrier to entry for challengers.
