🎓Former PayPal CEO Says AI Passes “The Turing Test”

Former PayPal CEO Peter Thiel discussed the importance of AI passing “The Turing Test” on Joe Rogan’s podcast.

Key Details:

• a British mathematician and logician, Alan Turing, developed “The Turing Test” in 1950 to measure a computer’s ability to exhibit human-like intelligence.

• “The Turing Test” had three participants:

  1. A Computer

  2. A Human Foil

  3. A Human Interrogator

• The Human Interrogator attempts to determine which is the Computer and the Human Foil by asking a series of questions through a keyboard.

• If the Computer can consistently fool the Human Interrogator, it’s considered an intelligent, thinking entity.

• “We weren’t even close to passing ‘The Turing Test’ in 2021. Then, OpenAI’s ChatGPT passed it,” said Thiel. “That was the Holy Grail of AI research for the previous 60 years.”

Why It’s Important:

• Thiel explained that “The Turing Test” signals that AI advancements will “rearrange our society’s economic, cultural, and political structure.”

• He added that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a “hopelessly vague concept” because the scientific community doesn’t even agree on an operational definition of human intelligence.

💵The AI Bubble is Growing?

Venture Capitalists (VCs) are leveraging the secondary market to invest in late-stage AI startups, growing the AI bubble.

Key Details:

• VCs are investors who provide startups with capital (e.g., money) in exchange for equity or ownership.

• The secondary market is where existing shareholders, including startup employees or VCs with ownership, can sell their shares.

• VCs with ownership create Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs): a method to pool money from a group of investors to invest in a startup.

• Selling SPVs at a significant premium relative to the startup’s fundamental value indicates a potential bubble. This overvaluation is fueled by investor enthusiasm.

• Currently, SPVs are being sold at a 30% premium for late-stage AI startups like Anthropic or xAI to other VCs or investors.

Why It’s Important:

• David Cahn, a partner at venture firm Sequoia Capital, outlined the glaring short-term mismatch between investments in Generative AI (GenAI) and the technology’s revenue.

• On the other hand, Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas believes AI will improve existing business frameworks by allowing companies to complete tasks with limited resources at dramatically lower costs, leading to indirect revenue.
