Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs introduced AlphaFold 3, an AI model that predicts the structure and interactions of all of life’s molecules.

Key Details:

  • AlphaFold 3 analyzes a broad spectrum of biomolecules, including DNA, RNA, and ligands (i.e., a small molecule, ion, or protein that binds to the DNA double helix).

  • Traditionally, protein structure prediction tools focus on individual proteins. AlphaFold 3 can develop joint structure predictions of complexes such as proteins, nucleic acids, and small molecules.

  • AlphaFold 3 boasts a 50% improvement in predicting drug-like interactions compared to traditional methods.

Why It’s Important:

  • Digital biology company Isomorphic Labs has already implemented AlphaFold 3 with pharmaceutical partners to redefine drug discovery approaches.

  • By visualizing how different molecules interact, scientists and researchers can better understand how cells function.

OpenAI unveiled Model Spec, a framework that outlines the startup’s approach to shaping the behavior of AI models.

Key Details:

  • AI models can misbehave, like Google’s Gemini image generator, which created diverse Nazi soldiers.

  • However, it’s hard to identify the difference between a bug or the poor construction of the underlying architecture that analyzes incoming data.

  • OpenAI’s Model Spec proposes three general principles for shaping desired AI model behavior:

    1. Provide Helpful Answers to Help Users Achieve Their Goals

    2. Benefit Humanity

    3. Help Ensure Safety and Legality

  • Always follow the chain of command, comply with applicable laws, don’t provide information hazards, respect creators and their rights, and protect people’s privacy.
