🚨Google Gemini Demo Video Controversy

Google faces backlash over its heavily edited demonstration video for the Gemini multimodal AI model.
Key Details:
Last Wednesday, Google launched Gemini, an AI system with human reasoning and complex task assessment to rival OpenAI’s GPT-4.
The six-minute video included Gemini’s ability to recognize the difference between visual pictures and physical objects.
In reality, frames were removed from the original footage and replaced with written prompts for Gemini inputs off-camera, enhancing the AI model’s outputs.
The demo’s content wasn’t collected in real-time. Instead, fixed images and conditioned text prompts created the illusion of “a smooth voice conversation with Gemini.”
Why It’s Important:
Earlier this month, The Information reported that Google scrapped plans for in-person events to launch Gemini, eventually settling on a virtual launch.
Google’s in fierce competition with Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s GPT-4. The technology giant has been struggling to recover from Google Bard’s shortcomings and monetize AI software to benefit G Suite offerings (i.e., Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, etc.).

🚀Rakuten Plans to Launch Proprietary AI Model

Japan’s fintech-to-e-commerce giant Rakuten plans to launch its proprietary language model to provide structures for massive data sets.
Key Details:
Rakuten possesses various businesses, including banking operations, e-commerce platforms, and telecommunications.
These businesses collect “very unique” data to train Large Language Models (LLMs). Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani plans to package this data for companies to access to improve operational efficiencies.
The company also plans to develop an internal AI system to improve communication channels and marketing efforts by 20%.
Why It’s Important:
Major U.S. and Chinese technology firms have been launching conversational AI chatbots. Notable U.S. companies include OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Anthropic’s Claude 2. Noteworthy Chinese agencies include Baidu’s Ernie Bot and Tencent’s Hunyuan model.
Japanese firms must catch up, and Rakuten intends to enter the global AI race with authority.
