The French Competition Authority announced a $270 million fine against Google for disregarding previous commitments to news publishers to train the Gemini AI models.

Key Details:
  • The French Competition Authority discovered Google leveraged copyrighted content from notable news outlets to train and develop GenAI models without publisher consent.

  • In 2019, the European Union passed a pan-EU digital copyright reform that extended copyright protections to online news headlines and snippets.

  • Google News’s “Top Stories” feature scraped and displayed headlines and snippets based on user search results without financial compensation.

  • In 2021, Google was served a $592 million fine for not fairly compensating publishers and crediting sources.

  • In response, Google signed copyright agreements with hundreds of publishers in France and offered a series of pledges to operate within antitrust regulations.

  • The French Competition Authority found that Google used content from publishers and press agencies to train Gemini in July 2023.

Why It’s Important:
  • Google references Article 4 of the Copyright Directive: “Exception or limitation for text and data mining for reproductions and extractions of lawfully accessible works and other subject matter for text and data mining.”

  • Simply put, Google claims the copyright exemption for text and data mining for scientific research applies to training AI models.

  • The French Competition Authority argues they haven’t determined whether AI advancements apply to this exemption.

  • Also, the clause mentions “lawfully accessible works.” Google made a legally binding commitment in 2021 to notify copyright holders about using their protected works when developing products.

Nvidia launched Project GR00T, a general-purpose foundation model for humanoid robots to learn skills and interact effectively with the real world.

Key Details:
  • GR00T is a multimodal AI system designed to equip humanoid robots with the ability to understand natural language and emulate movements by observing human actions.

  • Effectively processing human actions enables humanoid robots to quickly learn coordination and dexterity skills to navigate, adapt, and interact with the real world.

  • Leading robotics companies partnering with Nvidia to implement GR00T include Figure AI, Apptronik, Agility Robotics, Sanctuary AI, and Unitree Robotics.

  • Cofounder and chief robot officer Jonathan Hurst at Agility Robotics explained: “We’re at an inflection point in history, with human-centric robots poised to change labor forever.”

Why It’s Important:
  • Integrating AI systems into physical robots permits them to interpret data from their cameras and sensors to identify objects and navigate spaces while analyzing information to enact autonomous decisions in response to changing situations.

  • Humanoid robots can contribute to the labor economy by handling hazardous, highly technical, or monotonous tasks, allowing human workers to be redeployed to roles that require emotional intelligence and creative thinking.

  • Increased automation could put downward pressure on wages, especially for jobs with transferable skills that robots can easily replicate.

AI RESEARCH

👩‍⚕️AI Converts Brain Activity to images

Researchers at Stability AI and Princeton published a report unveiling MindEye2, a major leap in reconstructing seen images from the human brain.

MindEye 2 consists of shared-subject models that enable fMRI-to-image with one hour of data.

MindEye 2 analyzes brain scans from multiple patients, learning patterns to reconstruct visual perceptions from brain activity. The AI models transfer the brain data into an image generation system to produce photorealistic mental reconstructions.
