Is AI in a bubble, or are we living through an AI CapEx supercycle? OpenAI’s ballooning spend and Google’s latest quarterly earnings give us a clue.
Key details:
OpenAI reportedly raised its projected compute spend to around $750 billion through 2030, up from the initial planned spend of approximately $600 billion shared earlier this year. That’s roughly equivalent to a 25% increase within only a few months. OpenAI’s already allocated an initial $20 billion commitment to “Project Camellia,” a 1,400-acre data center campus that’s designed to draw at least 3.2 GW of power to support ChatGPT’s expansion.
Google generated $24.8 billion in Google Cloud revenue for Q2 FY2026, up 82% YoY, driven by demand to train and run agentic systems. Google Cloud’s operating income more than tripled from $2.8 billion to $8.8 billion, while contracted revenue backlog reportedly reached $513.9 billion. Google achieved a record net profit of $112.1 billion, up from $28.2 billion the previous year. In response to these record profits, Google raised its expected 2026 CapEx to between $195 billion and $205 billion.
The AI bubble concerns haven’t eased despite Google’s impressive quarterly earnings. Google’s stock price fell 6.78% even after beating Wall Street’s expectations. So, what’s fueling this investor sentiment? Google generated $39.1 billion in operating cash flow during Q2 while spending $44.9 billion on “property and equipment,” resulting in negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion. In other words, Google’s Q2 CapEx outpaced the cash it generated. Google also tapped external debt and equity markets to raise a historic $69.9 billion.
Key takeaways:
The 4 “AI hyperscalers” within the Magnificent 7, which include Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, plan to spend a combined $725 billion on CapEx this year, up 77% from last year’s record-breaking spend. The Magnificent 7 make up 33.7% of the S&P 500 Index, heavily influencing the U.S. financial markets and investor sentiment. What’s a little scary is that the 4 “AI hyperscalers” are increasingly issuing debt or utilizing cash reserves to fund AI infrastructure buildouts. In other words, they’re borrowing from a future that doesn’t exist yet.
The multi-trillion-dollar debate around The AI Bubble revolves around this simple question: “Where’s all the revenue?” 95% of enterprises report zero measurable return on AI relative to the heavy capital spent on adopting it. So, why are the Magnificent 7 continuing to throw money at AI? Historically, every major technological revolution has gone through overinvestment phases where the financial markets overreact. But even when the financial cycle dips, the technology cycle marches on. The 4 “AI hyperscalers” believe it’s better to overinvest and survive a correction than to underinvest and miss out.

OpenAI launched “Health in ChatGPT,” enabling you to securely connect your medical records to ChatGPT and receive personalized health guidance to navigate the U.S. healthcare system.
Key details:
OpenAI’s Head of Business Finance, Chengpeng M., revealed that people across the U.S. are increasingly relying on ChatGPT as a healthcare ally to assess wellness symptoms and decode medical jargon. In other words, people are treating ChatGPT as a 24/7 on-call doctor to review medical records and provide instant symptom analysis.
About 3 in 5 Americans say they’ve leaned on AI as a healthcare ally within the past three months. In underserved rural areas defined as “hospital deserts,” ChatGPT processes an average of nearly 600,000 healthcare-related questions per week. These hospital deserts exist in about 80% of U.S. counties, meaning over 120 million Americans still lack proper access to healthcare services.
About 7 in 10 medical-related conversations with ChatGPT take place outside standard clinical hours, meaning people are leveraging ChatGPT when they can’t readily access their healthcare provider. Even crazier, more than 300 million people turn to ChatGPT to prepare for a doctor’s appointment, make sense of a doctor’s assessment, and interpret lab results.
Key takeaways:
In the U.S., the healthcare system is a pain point for many Americans. For instance, the public perception of U.S. healthcare quality has sunk to a 24-year-low, with Americans rating access a C+ and costs a D+. Only 19% of Americans say they’re satisfied with the cost of healthcare.
People don’t just get sick between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. That’s why we’re turning to AI: no office visits, no limited hours, and no long waits. In underserved rural areas, AI essentially serves as a medical decision-making tool for determining: “Do I need to drive two towns over, or can I wait until Monday?”
