Google introduced Gemini 2.0 and showcased the companyā€™s new ā€œagentic era of AIā€ through Jules, Project Astra, and Project Mariner.

Key Details:
  1. Gemini 2.0: Googleā€™s most capable AI model yet that can understand and generate various forms of content, including text, image, audio, video, and code.

  2. Jules: Integrates with a developerā€™s GitHub workflow to offer inline code suggestions, fix coding bugs, and prepare pull requests.

  3. Project Astra: Understands the world around you by using cameras on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, or Pixel 9 Pro XL to locate missing glasses and review code.

  4. Project Mariner: Takes control of your Google Chrome browser through a Chrome extension to order food from a restaurantā€™s website or fill out a spreadsheet on Google Sheets.

Why Itā€™s Important:
  • Gemini 2.0 will support AI agents that autonomously take action, adapt in real-time, and solve multi-step problems.

  • ā€œIf Gemini 1.0 was about organizing and understanding information, Gemini 2.0 is about making it much more useful,ā€ said Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

OpenAI showcased three ChatGPT integrations with Apple Intelligence during the fifth day of the ā€œ12 Days of OpenAIā€ event.

Key Details:
  • The ā€œ12 Days of OpenAIā€ event involves 12 livestreams across 12 days of ā€œa bunch of new things, big and small.ā€

  • Apple is rolling out the second wave of Apple Intelligence, a new suite of AI tools built directly into iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2.

  • Hereā€™s a concise breakdown of the three ChatGPT integrations:

    1. Siri + ChatGPT: Siri can utilize ChatGPT to access ā€œbroader world knowledgeā€ when answering questions.

    2. Writing Tools: Rewrites, proofreads, and summarizes text across apps. For example, ChatGPT can adjust your tone (e.g., concise, friendly, or professional).

    3. Camera Control: ChatGPT can see, hear, and speak to quickly learn more about the places and objects around you.

Why Itā€™s Important:
  • ChatGPTā€™s ā€œLive Cameraā€ feature would allow the conversational chatbot to process real-time video from any Apple deviceā€™s camera.

  • These ChatGPT integrations with Apple Intelligence enable the conversational chatbot to see, engage, and take action across apps. It feels like OpenAIā€™s gearing up to deploy AI agents.

AI RESEARCH

šŸŽ™ļøMIT Enables AI to Explain Itself in Plain English

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) introduced ā€œEXPLINGO,ā€ an AI system that translates Complex AI Explanations into easy-to-understand summaries.

AI models are often referred to as ā€œBlack Boxesā€ that require large amounts of high-quality datasets and computational resources. So, what does that mean? While AI models excel at generating outputs, we donā€™t always understand the internal workings that lead to generating those outputs.

To solve this issue, developers designed methods to identify patterns representing specific concepts within AI models. For example, OpenAI designed the ā€œScaling and Evaluating Sparse Autoencodersā€ method, where an autoencoder efficiently compresses (i.e., encodes) input data and then reconstructs (i.e., decodes) that compressed input data. However, these Complex AI Explanations are filled with technical jargon thatā€™s difficult for non-experts to understand.

ā€œEXPLINGOā€ helps non-experts make sense of these Complex AI Explanations through a NARRATOR and a GRADER:

  1. NARRATOR: Uses a Large Language Model (LLM) to turn technical jargon into easy-to-understand summaries.

  2. GRADER: Evaluates the easy-to-understand summaries across four metrics: coherence, completeness, factuality, and style adherence.
