🌉Google’s New AI-Powered Search Experience Features

Google’s Search Engine Experience (SGE), which enhances Google Search with AI capabilities, received new features allowing users to generate images using prompts and write drafts with customized outputs.

Key Details:
  • Microsoft has offered the ability for users to generate images with Bing Chat through OpenAI’s DALL-E model since March, so it’s not surprising Google is providing a competitive alternative.

  • To enable these features, sign into your Google account, open a Google Chrome tab, click the Labs icon, and select the experiment you want to authorize.

  • To test the Image Creation tool, type your query into the Google search bar (e.g., “Draw an image of a capybara wearing a chef’s hat cooking breakfast”) and choose your favorite image from several options.

  • Google also added a model that creates written drafts from the search bar in minutes with specific length parameters and tonality choices. If you like the generated report, export the results to Google Docs or Gmail.

  • Google spokesperson Graig Ewer explained, “A variety of LLMs currently powers SGE. The models used in SGE are trained on data from publicly available sources and human supervision data.”

Why It’s Important:
  • Google’s SGE tool provides Google with a competitive advantage over Microsoft’s Bing Chat powered by OpenAI’s language models—It’s more integrated within the Google ecosystem.

  • According to W3Counter, Chrome accounts for 63% of the total market share for all browsers worldwide. Google’s SGE tools can easily access and process information from other Google products, such as Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Scholar. This integration leads to more comprehensive and informative answers to user queries.

HARVARD RESEARCH

🦠AI Anticipates Virus Mutations

Researchers at Harvard Medical School and the University of Oxford developed an AI tool that predicts viral variants before they emerge.

Key Details:
  • EVEscape is a viral antibody forecasting tool with two elements: (1) a model of evolutionary sequences that predicts changes occurring to a virus and (2) structural information about the virus. Together, these elements allow EVEscape to establish predictions about the variants likely to occur as the virus evolves.

  • If EVEscape was deployed at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, it would have predicted the most frequent mutations and identified the most concerning variants for SARS-CoV-2.

  • Debora Marks, Professor of Systems Biology at the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School, stated: “We want to know if we can anticipate the variation in viruses and forecast new variants. It’s essential for designing vaccines and therapies.”

Why It’s Important:
  • The ability to evaluate vaccines and therapies against current and future viral variants will allow scientists to design treatments to withstand the escape mechanisms a virus acquires.

  • Marks explained that “viruses are flexible. It’s almost like they’ve evolved to evolve.” This forecasting model eliminates the mutation issue.
