📊Growing Public Concerns Around The Role of AI
Pew Research recently published a survey measuring how Americans view the role of AI in daily life and discovered a trend of more concern than excitement.
Key Details:
52% of Americans claim they feel more concerned than excited about the increased use of AI, while 36% state they feel an equal mix of these emotions.
61% of adults 65 and older are concerned about the growing use of AI in daily life, while 4% are excited. That gap is much smaller among those ages 18 to 29: 42% are concerned, and 17% are enthusiastic.
Distress around AI use in daily life has grown proportional to rising public awareness of AI models. Currently, concern outweighs excitement by 47% to 15%.
Why It’s Important:
This survey highlights the growing divide and expanding negative sentiment towards AI.
Americans with higher education levels are more likely than others to reinforce that AI is having a positive impact across most use cases.
Americans possess negative views of AI’s impact on privacy but support AI models that streamline access to convenient products and services.

🇺🇸The US Enforces Restrictions on AI Chip Sales
The Biden administration implemented new export restrictions on Nvidia and AMD chips in select Middle Eastern countries.
Key Details:
Nvidia announced the new licensing requirement in a regulatory filing: “During the second quarter of fiscal year 2024, the USG [US Government] also informed us of an additional licensing requirement for a subset of A100 and H100 products destined to certain customers and other regions, including some countries in the Middle East.”
The Middle East constraints will have “no material impact” on AMD and “don’t affect a meaningful portion” of Nvidia’s revenue, according to Nvidia spokesperson Bob Sherbin.
Nvidia’s A100 and H100 chips have been subject to export restrictions by the Biden administration over concerns about their use in China and Russian military applications.
Why It’s Important:
Nvidia’s H100 chips are so valuable that startups can use them as collateral for loans: “Everyone is operating under the assumption that H100 GPUs will be nearly impossible to access next year.”
The US government is attempting to control the accessibility of these powerful chips required to build AI models. The Middle East, China, and Russia are major regions facing restrictions on Nvidia and AMD processors.
The Biden administration is blocking China’s access to advanced AI chips. However, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) builds Nvidia’s Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). This restriction could fuel China’s desire to invade Taiwan.
