Harvard students recently turned Metaā€™s Ray-Ban smart glasses into a doxing device that can access a strangerā€™s personal information in seconds.

Key Details:
  • Metaā€™s Ray-Ban smart glasses are an AI-powered device with a ā€œMeta AI with Visionā€ feature for processing visual data.

  • It allows users to share their views on video calls hands-free via WhatsApp and Messenger.

  • Harvard students turned this AI-powered device into a doxing device that can ā€œidentify anybody on the street.ā€

  • To use it, you put Metaā€™s Ray-Ban smart glasses on. Then, as you walk by a stranger, the smart glasses detect their face and send their personal information to your phone.

  • It uses data sources like online articles and voter registration databases to ā€œfigure out their name, phone number, and home address.ā€

  • They showcased how it can be leveraged to create networking opportunities with strangers by pretending to know them.

Why Itā€™s Important:
  • This doxing device highlights some major privacy concerns surrounding AI-enabled devices.

  • Even though it synthesizes information about strangers from publicly available data sources, the ability to access it so quickly is scary. You can pretend you know a stranger to foster trust for personal gain.

BIG TECH INDUSTRY

šŸŽ™Foxconn Chairman Says AI Boom Still Has ā€œSome Time to Goā€

Image Source: First on CNBC/ā€œFoxconn Chairman Young Liu Talks Fourth Quarter (Q4) Guidance and AI Investment Boomā€/Screenshot

During a First on CNBC interview, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu explained how corporate investments in AI developments ā€œstill have some time to go.ā€

Key Details:
  • Foxconn is the worldā€™s largest electronics manufacturer. For example, it produces infrastructure for cloud-based AI applications like OpenAIā€™s ChatGPT and assembles Appleā€™s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.

  • Liu believes ā€œon-device AIā€ applications, where data is processed directly on your device rather than in the cloud, ā€œwill be the next big AI boom.ā€

  • ā€œAI-related devices will be the next way to grow,ā€ said Liu. ā€œWeā€™re seeing this nowā€ with Apple Intelligence.

  • Apple Intelligence is a new suite of AI features built into the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro that rewrites, summarizes, and manipulates content across iOS apps.

  • Liu emphasized that Big Tech companies are increasingly focused on building superintelligent AI models with on-device AI use cases.

Why Itā€™s Important:
  • Foxconnā€™s financial growth supports Liuā€™s opinions. The electronics manufacturerā€™s Q3 FY2024 Report highlights a 20.2% Year-Over-Year (YOY) improvement with $57.3 billion in revenue.

  • YOY compares a companyā€™s performance over the current year to the previous year.

  • This strong performance is due to the heightened demand for AI servers, which Foxconn supplies to global Tech Giants, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia.

AI RESEARCH

šŸ“‹Checklists Improve LLM Evaluations

University of Oxford (ā€œOxonā€) researchers developed Targeted Instruct-Evaluation with ChecKlists (TICK), a method for evaluating Large Language Models (LLMs) using checklists.

LLMs are AI models pre-trained on vast amounts of data to generate human-like text. Current methods for evaluating LLMs often rely on subjective ranking systems with ā€œBest,ā€ ā€œGood,ā€ or ā€œBadā€ options.

To solve this issue, TICK creates tailored checklists for specific instructions. These checklists break down tasks into ā€œYesā€ or ā€œNoā€ questions, which objectively measure an LLMā€™s ability to follow specific instructions.

They also created Self-TICK, which repurposes the tailored checklists for self-improvement, leading LLMs to score 7.8% higher on reasoning tasks.
