AI AND ENERGY
🔌How Much Energy Does OpenAI’s ChatGPT Use?

Epoch AI discovered that OpenAI’s ChatGPT doesn’t require as much energy to answer your prompts as we once thought.
Key Details:
A widely cited claim is that ChatGPT requires 3 watt-hours (Wh) of electricity to answer a single prompt.
However, when ChatGPT is powered by GPT-4o (“o” for “omni”), it only requires 0.3 Wh of electricity to answer a single prompt.
For context, 0.3 Wh is less than a Laptop or an LED Lightbulb consumes in a few minutes. The average U.S. household uses 28,000 Wh per day.
Why It’s Important:
As AI Models and AI Hardware become more efficient, they require less energy consumption. Despite this, new data centers could require 500 terawatt-hours (TWh), or 46 million households worth, of electricity by 2027.
“No power grid is designed to handle the volatile energy requirements of new data centers powering AI models,” said Bloom Energy CCO Aman Joshi.
AI AND ROBOTS
⚙️“pi0” Helps Robots Understand Natural Language Commands
Hugging Face recently launched “pi0,” a general-purpose AI model that enables robots to understand natural language commands.
Key Details:
“pi0” relies on Vision Language Models (VLMs) to help robots understand the world through text and images.
VLMs consist of three elements:
Text Encoder: Converts text into numerical representations.
Image Encoder: Converts images into numerical representations.
Information Fuser: Creates unified numerical representations that contain text and images.
Imagine telling a robot: “Grab the red ball!” The VLMs within “pi0” convert this natural language command into a Text Encoder, allowing the robot to understand it.
Why It’s Important:
“pi0” allows robots to perform complex multi-step tasks like folding laundry, bussing tables, and packaging groceries.
Hugging Face aims to make building AI-powered robots easier than ever. That includes programming them by just telling them what to do.
AI IN THE ART WORLD
🖌️Thousands of Artists Call to Cancel AI Art Auction
Christie’s, which offers the world’s best Fine Art, Luxury, and Antiques, decided to host an Art Auction called Augmented Intelligence, which aims to showcase “the breadth and quality of AI Art.”
In response, over 4,586 artists have signed an open letter to cancel the Art Auction because the AI Art was “created using AI models trained on copyrighted artworks that exploit human artists.”
AI is creeping into the art world. Last year, Ai-Da, the world’s first ultra-realistic humanoid robot artist, made history at Sotheby’s Auction House by selling her “A.I. God Portrait of Alan Turing” for $1.08 million.
