A Times Square billboard proclaims: “Stop hiring humans.” The viral marketing stunt was launched by Artisan AI, which deploys AI-powered sales specialists to autonomously discover, prospect, and contact potential customers. The goal?! Go viral. It worked.
To pessimists, it confirmed their worst fear: AI isn’t just about cutting costs and enhancing efficiency, it’s about replacing people. To optimists, it solidified their strongest belief: people cling to comfort and defend familiarity, even at the expense of necessary change.
Each side radicalizes the other, skewing public discourse. Is AI a miracle or a menace? A hope or a hazard? A hero or the villain? This constant framing traps us between extremes. So, how does this narrative ultimately distort our perception of reality? What can we do to prevent it?
🗞️THE NEGATIVE NEWS NARRATIVE
⦿ 1️⃣ Incentives Influence Behavior?
Today’s polarized discourse around AI isn’t accidental. It reflects structural incentives that actively reward bias. For instance, executives positioned to profit are incentivized to hype AI’s promise, while employees threatened by automation are inclined to emphasize AI’s peril. In other words, capital sells the upside while labor braces for the downside.
Just as executives and employees act according to their incentives, the media follow theirs. The Lead of an article is designed to hook readers by creating intrigue and setting the tone. Negative Leads engage readers far more because humans are naturally Loss Averse: we overestimate potential losses and underestimate potential gains. For example, the pain of losing $100 outweighs the pleasure of gaining $100. Similarly, the fear of losing your job to AI overshadows the benefits of AI making your job easier.
These structural incentives shape which articles are written, amplified, and remembered. When fear spreads faster than facts, negative coverage dominates. Stories that tap into anxiety, outrage, and uncertainty naturally attract more likes, clicks, and shares.
⦿ 2️⃣ The Rise of Doomer Stories?
A freelance full-stack developer, Prithwish Nath, recently analyzed how news coverage surrounding AI shifted since 2020. He selected nearly 10,000 AI-related articles from Google News and measured the tone of each article’s headline and description using Sentiment Analysis, which evaluates word choice to estimate whether text is positive {+1}, neutral {0}, or negative {-1}.
From 2020 through 2022, the average sentiment scores consistently ranged from {+0.15} to {+0.22}, with news coverage dominated by innovative breakthroughs like: “AI Achieves Human-Level Learning on Medical Imaging.”
When OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022, GenAI shifted from academic circles to everyday relevance seemingly overnight. Within weeks, over 100 million people were leveraging ChatGPT to get homework help and brainstorm business ideas.
In 2023, the average sentiment scores slipped slightly, ranging from {+0.01} to {+0.05}, as news coverage toggled between awe and alarm. Then, TIME Magazine famously published a new cover: “THE END OF HUMANITY.”
By 2024, the average sentiment scores declined sharply, ranging from {-0.02} to {+0.00}, as news coverage fixated on mass job loss and the decline of civilization: “AI Is Starting to Threaten White-Collar Jobs. Few Industries Are Immune.”
🦾IS MASS AUTOMATION LIKELY?
⦿ 3️⃣ AI Isn’t a Job Killer, It’s a Job Shifter?
Given recent headlines, it’s easy to view AI as the ultimate job killer. Accenture laid off over 11,000 employees globally as part of an $865 million AI-focused restructuring strategy. Amazon just cut 14,000 corporate jobs, which represents around 4% of the online retail giant’s corporate workforce, to stay nimble as it adopts GenAI.
In 2025, the media published 23x more AI-related articles about job displacement than in 2020. Unsurprisingly, roughly 71% of U.S. workers feel concerned that AI might “put too many people out of work permanently.”
Despite this, it turns out AI won’t actually kill our jobs. TBL at Yale found that AI has yet to cause widespread job losses across the U.S. workforce. Instead, the U.S. workforce remains “a story of continuity over change, reflecting a cyclical trend that’s not purely tech-driven.”
Approximately 60% of U.S. workers today are employed in job roles that didn’t even exist in 1940, implying that more than 85% of all employment growth within the past 80 years has been driven by new technologies. Macro Research Analyst at Goldman Sachs, Sarah Dong, explained: “Predictions of technology reducing the need for human labor have a long history but a poor track record.”
The U.S. workforce remains engaged and employed. The LFPR sits at 62.5%, meaning about six in ten working-age Americans are working or actively seeking work. Although the LFPR remains well below the 67.3% peak reached in 2000, it’s attributed to the long-term decline of Baby Boomers aging out of the U.S. workforce, while Millennials and Gen Z prioritize education over employment. Meanwhile, the UR sits at 4.6%, comfortably below the historical average of 5.6%. More importantly, U.S. employment is expected to grow 4.0% by 2033.
🧟♂️THE AI APOCALYPSE COUNTDOWN?
⦿ 4️⃣ Is AI Truly a Threat to Humanity?
The proportion of AI-related articles speculating about AGI ending humanity rose from roughly 3% in 2020 to about 9% by 2025. Let’s examine the two most notorious origins of this doomsday premise:
🟡 The Paperclip Maximizer:
In 2003, famous Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom proposed the “Paperclip Maximizer”: if AGI were given the specific objective of making as many paperclips as possible, it could, if extremely capable and poorly constrained, pursue that specific objective so relentlessly that it converts everything on Earth, including humans, into a giant paperclip factory, not out of malice, but as a consequence of rational pursuit.
Critics like former Sr. Staff Engineer at Google, François Chollet, argue this thought experiment showcases an unrealistic abstraction because it frames AGI as merely a machine blindly chasing a single predefined goal. In reality, true AGI would possess adaptive learning, flexible reasoning, and contextual understanding.
🟢 The AI Singularity Concept:
Human intelligence develops from the knowledge we absorb over a lifetime, which is encoded within our brain’s intricate network of neurons. Our ability to connect, change, and coordinate these neurons influences our cognitive skills (e.g., attention, memory, and thinking). GenAI operates using a “digital brain” that utilizes “artificial neurons” to mimic the mechanisms of human intelligence, but it lacks our self-awareness. AI Singularity is a hypothetical concept where GenAI gains self-awareness and becomes more intelligent than humans in ways we can’t even imagine, rapidly improving itself to achieve superintelligence within weeks.
In reality, the concept of AI Singularity is bottlenecked by technical barriers like AI infrastructure reliability, compute power capacity, high-quality dataset scarcity, and the need for large teams of specialized AI researchers to constantly coordinate training, evaluation, and deployment.
