🏦Investigating OpenAI’s Non-Profit Status

Public Citizen requested California’s Attorney General Robert Bonta to investigate whether OpenAI should maintain its non-profit status.

Key Details:

• In 2019, OpenAI transitioned from a non-profit model to a “capped profit” framework called OpenAI LP to “raise investment capital and attract employees with startup-like equity.” The non-profit entity controls the for-profit OpenAI LP.

• Recent news suggests OpenAI is favoring the for-profit subsidiary over its non-profit purpose.

• Public Citizen highlights reinstating CEO Sam Altman and removing board members as for-profit interests.

• Attorney General Robert Bonta could leverage California law to dissolve OpenAI’s non-profit status and redistribute its assets to another charity with similar purposes.

Why It’s Important:

• Legal concerns regarding OpenAI’s messy company structure persist as lawsuits and regulatory battles like copyright infringement highlight them.

🍎Apple Relocates San Diego’s AI Team

Apple is relocating a 121-person team focused on data annotations to improve Siri’s responses from San Diego, CA, to Austin, TX, by the end of February.

Key Details:

• The team is responsible for improving Siri by examining queries and ranking the virtual assistant’s replies to optimize accuracy across languages.

• The staff was shocked by the relocation announcement, anticipating an internal move within San Diego, CA.

• With most workers unwilling to make the trip, Apple released a statement claiming employees unwilling to relocate face termination.

• The technology giant is offering $7,000 in stipends and guaranteed job security for team members who relocate.

Why It’s Important:

• Apple managed to avoid layoffs since the pandemic, only removing a few corporate retail jobs and recruiters last April. The company provides relocation offers instead of traditional layoffs, knowing it will deter some employees.

• Apple is also trying to capitalize on the low tax burden, “at-will” employment practices, and growing economy of Austin, TX.

🚨Create a ChatGPT Hotkey on Mac

1. Locate the Launchpad and open Automator.

2. Click “New Document” and select “Quick Action.”

3. Drag and drop “RunAppleScript” into the main window.

4. Replace the placeholder script with this:

tell application "Google Chrome" if it is not running then activate delay 1 end if open location "https://chat.openai.com/" end tell

5. Save quick action as “ChatGPT Open” and navigate to the Apple Logo → System Settings → Privacy and Security → Accessibility.

6. Click on “+” and add “Automator,” “Script Editor,” and “System Events.”

7. Navigate to System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts and click “Services.”

8. Open the dropdown for General and select “ChatGPT Open.”

9. Double-click on the right side and assign a hotkey (e.g., “Shift+Option+Command+G”).

10. Open Google Chrome, search chat.openai.com, and select “command+D” to bookmark it.
