Developers released a new theory called the “Winter Break Hypothesis,” which claims OpenAI’s ChatGPT outputs are 5% shorter during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

• @RobLynch99 identified that GPT-4-Turbo produced shorter completions when the Application Programming Interface (API) believed it was December versus May.

• He developed two system prompts that informed the API if it was December or May, comparing the distribution of prompt completions in each month.

• When analyzing mean completions, the May prompt system performed 212 more outputs.

• ChatGPT confirmed the theory in a post on X: “This isn’t intentional. Model behavior can be unpredictable, and we’re looking into fixing it.”

• The conversational AI chatbot isn’t just lazier; it’s less creative, less willing to follow instructions, and less able to remain in any role. ChatGPT refuses to complete labor-intensive prompts like requests to write code or transcribe text.

• These summaries provide access to news stories requiring subscriptions to read. ChatGPT will cite the Axel Springer publication and provide links to view the full articles.

• The summaries will be available on ChatGPT once the articles are published. So, breaking news is a new feature that enhances the user experience.

Why It’s Important:

• This partnership provides data for OpenAI’s Large Language Model (LLM) while driving traffic and subscription revenue for the Axel Springer brands.
