💸Is OpenAI Fighting Bankruptcy?
According to AIM, the popular chatbot ChatGPT costs OpenAI roughly $700K daily, and bankruptcy could occur by 2024.
Key Details:
OpenAI has burned through $540M since its launch in 2022.
After an initial surge, ChatGPT’s user base declined by 12% from June to July as hype halted.
Microsoft’s $10B investment in OpenAI is likely keeping the company afloat.
OpenAI plans to reach $200M in revenue this year and $1B in 2024, but financial models present another story.
GPU shortages and employees pursuing high-paying jobs from competitors are adding to OpenAI’s problems.
Why It’s Important:
OpenAI is a cash-burning machine despite attempting to monetize GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.
They’re still struggling with limited revenue streams. A significant percentage of the company’s revenue comes from donations.
Leaner competitors with open-source models are a serious threat to ChatGPT. If OpenAI doesn’t secure funding soon, the company must file for bankruptcy.
CYBERSECURITY
🔐Hackers Expose Flaws in Popular Chatbots
2,200 participants at the Defcon Hacker Conference in Las Vegas are competing to uncover security issues in popular AI chatbot models.
Key Details:
Eight companies are testing their AI models: Anthropic, Cohere, Google, Hugging Face, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, and Stability AI.
Participants will earn points for successfully coaxing a chatbot to generate political misinformation or incorrect answers.
Hackers have already tricked the top AI models with poisoned data and altered user queries.
Why It’s Important:
AI’s ability to harness massive amounts of data is impressive, but its security isn’t. Chatbots can be easily manipulated to generate racist, biased, and harmful content.
Technology impacts policy, economics, and privacy. Who will determine what’s considered misinformation? Will regulating these models to mitigate risks ruin the user experience?
