📦 Is OpenAI’s AI-Powered Gadget a “Lickable” Pen?

OpenAI reportedly developed a prototype of their secretive AI-powered gadget, internally codenamed Gumdrop.”

Key Details:
  • Earlier last year, OpenAI acquired io Products, Inc. for nearly $6.5 billion, gaining legendary Apple designer Jony Ive and his hand-picked collective of approximately 55 designers, architects, and engineers.

  • Gumdrop is reportedly an AI-powered pen that transcribes handwritten notes directly into ChatGPT, converting doodles and sketches into machine-readable digital records.

  • It’s allegedly paired with a to-go audio device that can hear and speak naturally and contextually to anticipate your needs. According to The Information, OpenAI’s building a new audio model architecture to achieve more natural speech patterns with faster response times for this exact purpose.

Why It’s Important:
  • Ive believes the ultimate standard for a successful design is when people “can’t help but lick it or bite it.” Altman described the prototype as elegant, minimalist, and palm-sized, admitting he felt the impulse to “lick it.” Seriously, they said that.

  • For the past two decades, our digital lives have been dominated by typing, tapping, and touching. Now, the hands-free era is emerging as speech recognition improves and LLMs make talking to technology feel realistic.

💤 Predicting 130 Diseases From One Night’s Sleep

Stanford Medicine recently developed SleepFM,” a multimodal sleep foundation model that accurately predicts 130 health conditions, including heart failure and breast cancer, from one night’s sleep.

Key Details:
  • It was trained on over 585,000 hours of PSG recordings from approximately 65,000 participants, analyzing everything from heart rhythms to breathing behaviors and muscle movements.

  • To achieve this, it doesn’t just receive one sleep signal. It receives multiple sleep signals through EEG, ECG, and EMG, each representing a different “language” describing the same sleep cycle.

  • To help this multimodal sleep foundation model learn how these different “languages” relate to each other, they leveraged LOO-CL: a new training technique that hides one sleep signal and challenges SleepFM to reconstruct it based on the other sleep signals. “It’s essentially learning the language of sleep,” explained James Zou, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical data science.

Why It’s Important:
  • It predicted Parkinson’s with 89% accuracy, Dementia with 85% accuracy, Heart Failure with 80%, Stroke with 79% accuracy, and Mortality Risk with 84% accuracy.

  • By combining multiple sleep signals, this multimodal sleep foundation model can observe how the brain, heart, and muscles interact during one night’s sleep, providing a much richer picture of overall health than any one sleep signal could.
