🗣️It’s Too Expensive to Fight Every AI Copyright Battle

Getty Images CEO Craig Peters recently told CNBC that he’s learned it’s simply way too expensive to fight every AI copyright battle.

Key Details:
  • Getty Images is a well-known photo licensing company that creates, captures, and preserves visual content for consumers and businesses.

  • In 2023, Getty Images sued Stability AI for developing an image generator that was trained on “more than 12 million photographs from Getty Images without permission from or compensation to Getty Images.”

  • “It’s extraordinarily expensive,” Peters told CNBC. “We can’t pursue all the infringements because the courts are just prohibitively expensive. We’re spending millions and millions of dollars on just one court case.”

  • “We’re not against competition,” said Peters. “But AI Scraping is just unfair competition; it’s theft!”

Why It’s Important:
  • AI firms argue that AI Systems fall under Fair Use through Transformative Use: adding new expression, meaning, or messaging to the original works. In other words, AI Systems learn patterns from existing content to generate new content significantly different from the original works.

  • Even well-resourced companies struggle to fund the legal battles required to enforce what they believe is copyright infringement. AI firms recognize that most artists and creators can’t afford the legal costs associated with fighting them. This dynamic creates a kind of legal shield by cost,” allowing AI firms to continue innovating at a rapid pace while operating in the gray area of Copyright Law.

AI RESEARCH

⚙️LLMs Learn to Improve Their Own Reasoning Abilities

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) recently developed INTUITOR,” which helps LLMs improve their reasoning abilities through self-guided learning.

Key Details:
  • INTUITOR relies on Reinforcement Learning from Internal Feedback (RLIF), which enables LLMs to teach themselves complex reasoning skills using internal confidence scores.

  • RLIF is comprised of four components:

    1. Learner: The LLMs

    2. Environment: The complex math problems, logical puzzles, or coding challenges the LLMs are given.

    3. Policy: The strategies the LLMs use to solve those complex math problems, logical puzzles, or coding challenges.

    4. Feedback: The internal confidence scores the LLMs generate to assess the quality of their own solutions.

  • INTUITOR trains the LLMs to learn the optimal Policy within an Environment to obtain the maximum Feedback.

  • In simpler terms, INTUITOR trains LLMs to get better at solving complex problems using their own confidence as a guide.

Why It’s Important:
  • When developers tackle real-world coding workflows, it’s not just about writing code; it’s about testing, debugging, and refactoring that code over and over.

  • INTUITOR helps LLMs not only generate code but also “think” like developers by constantly taking in Feedback to adjust how they generate the code.
