  • The survey revealed that 42% of MacBook users report using AI-based apps daily, while 63% believe AI apps are more beneficial than standard apps.

  • MacBook app developers embrace AI, with 44% of engineers implementing AI tools or Machine Learning (ML) models.

  • The most used AI MacBook apps included TypingMind, Elephas, Spark, Notion, Grammarly, Craft, Luminar NEO, MacGPT, Asana, Raycast, and MacWhisper.

  • Product Lead at Setapp, Mykola Savin, explained: “We see how AI is transforming the app’s usage experience by providing additional user assistance.”

AI ARCHAEOLOGY

📜AI Decodes Ancient Roman Scrolls

Luke Farritor, a 21-year-old computer science major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, developed a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm that deciphers Greek letters from burned scrolls and sculptures.

Key Details:
  • Mount Vesuvius buried hundreds of scrolls in 79 AD, when the eruption forced Herculaneum under 20 meters of volcanic ash. Early attempts to unroll the scrolls resulted in crumpled fragments.

  • The fragile scrolls can’t be physically unrolled. The ink on the older Herculaneum scrolls is carbon-based, essentially charcoal and water, with the same density in computerized tomography (CT) scans as the papyrus (i.e., paper) it sits on, so it doesn’t show up at all.

  • Farritor developed a Machine Learning (ML) model that detected several topography lines on the rolled-up papyrus. He relied on subtle, small-scale differences in surface texture to train his neural networks.

  • Federica Nicolardi, a papyrologist at the University of Naples in Italy, described Farritor’s findings: “It was such a dream. Now, I can see something from the inside of a scroll.”

Why It’s Important:
  • Farritor’s AI model allows historians to access invaluable insights into ancient culture, societal structure, political systems, technological advancements, and everyday life.

  • Digitally resurrecting fragments of ancient texts allows us to preserve cultural heritage, advance linguistic studies, and unveil technological advancements.
