🆘 Meta Is Lying About Llama 2

Llama 2, or Large Language Model AI 2, is a collection of LLMs used to power generative AI tools.

Meta developed Llama 2 with Microsoft to create the next major generative AI platform.

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) highlighted that Meta’s claim that Llama 2 is an open-source platform is false.

They explained that providing “restrictions on commercial use for users” and limiting the “use of the model and software for certain purposes” doesn’t fulfill the criteria for open-source software.

The platform must allow free distribution, source code, and derived works for all users.

Why It’s Important:
  • By partnering with Microsoft to provide a public cloud offering, Meta added restrictions that prevent other companies from using the platform.

  • These added restrictions violate the criteria for a platform to be labeled open source.

PHOTOGUARD

📸Protect Images From AI Models

MIT researchers developed PhotoGuard, an AI tool that protects images from AI models.

PhotoGuard alters pixel values in photos to disrupt an AI model’s ability to manipulate images. These modified pixel values are invisible to the human eye.

Why It’s Important:
  • PhotoGuard can prevent fake images from manipulating the public.

  • This tool could protect businesses that use authentic photos to promote their brand.

WORLD NEWS

🇨🇳China’s AI Regulations For Apps

China removed several AI apps from the App Store two weeks prior to the country’s new generative AI regulations.

Chinese developers received notices from Apple informing them of their app’s removal. In a letter to OpenCat, Apple cited: “Content is illegal in China.”

In July, China announced measures to regulate generative AI services, including API providers. These measures required AI apps “operating in China to obtain an administrative license.”

Why It’s Important:
  • China is regulating AI developments and only supports “secure and trustworthy chips, software, tools, and data sources.”

  • These new regulations will deter developers from entering the market, allowing deep-pocketed internet giants to navigate compliance layers.
