Meta released Llama 3, the company’s latest open-source Large Language Model (LLM), with pre-trained and instruction-tuned versions to support various applications.

Key Details:
  • Meta’s Llama 3 is available in 8 billion (8B) or 70 billion (70B) parameters and excels in language nuances, contextual understanding, and complex tasks like dialogue generation.

  • Meta’s Llama 3 boasts a refined post-training process that lowers false refusal rates, improves response alignment, promotes diverse answers, and elevates code generation.

  • The AI models were trained on a dataset 7X larger than Meta’s Llama 2, containing 15 trillion tokens and 4X more code.

Why It’s Important:
  • Meta’s Llama 3 is embedded across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger through the new Meta AI assistant.

  • Benchmark tests show Meta’s Llama 3 8B and 70B outperforming similarly-sized AI models like Google’s Gemma and Anthropic’s Claude 3 Sonnet.

🚒Google’s AI Tools Assists With Disaster Response

Image Source: COL Richard Goldenberg/New York National Guard

Google’s X Moonshot Factory is partnering with the U.S. National Guard to develop AI tools for analyzing images of disaster zones.

Key Details:
  • The AI tools can evaluate aerial images of disaster zones in seconds by identifying compromised critical infrastructure and generating site-specific labeled maps for first responders.

  • Currently, the U.S. National Guard manually assesses disaster zones by scouring thousands of aerial images and highlighting any changes in impacted infrastructure. Then, the U.S. military must analyze the changes and deploy them to the appropriate emergency response teams.

  • Brain McGarry, the Division Chief of Operations and Training (DCOT), explained: “Leveraging AI models to perform the routine tasks of georectification, identification, and labeling will greatly speed up retrieving critical information for responder teams.”

Why It’s Important:
  • Disasters are time-sensitive situations that involve human lives. AI models can streamline the identification of critical infrastructure damage to enhance the deployment of first responders.

  • Manually sifting through thousands of aerial images can be prone to human error. AI tools can analyze the data more precisely, ensuring crucial infrastructure damage isn’t missed.

AI RESEARCH

👨‍⚕️OpenAI’s GPT-4 Can Analyze Eye Conditions?!

Researchers from the University of Cambridge discovered that OpenAI’s GPT-4 offers expert-level clinical knowledge for assessing eye conditions and suggesting treatment plans.

OpenAI’s GPT-4 was tested against unspecialized junior doctors, trainee doctors, and expert ophthalmologists with a series of 87 patient scenarios involving a specific eye problem.

OpenAI’s GPT-4 scored significantly better than junior doctors and trainee doctors while competing with expert ophthalmologists to offer an accurate diagnosis and outline viable treatment options.
